To top it all off, you don’t want to be dealing with a complicated skincare regimen while traveling. Quite the opposite. So how can you keep vacation-induced dryness, breakouts and other skin problems at bay while keeping your routine as streamlined and suitcase-friendly as possible?
A crucial step 1 of planning your travel skincare routine! Your skin needs different things, and faces different challenges, depending on the climate (as an aside, this is why you should have separate summer and winter skincare routines.)
Cold air means drier skin, so you’ll need to pack a more intensive hydrator. A hot and humid destination on the other hand means you’ll be dealing with sweat and increased sebum production, so you may want to consider oil control products such as mattifying serum and blotting tissues. Air quality matters too. Are you a country girl headed to the city? Look for formulas which contain antioxidants, to protect your skin against the increased air pollution.
While face wipes don’t do such a thorough job of cleaning the skin as an actual cleanser, they’re handy in a pinch – such as when you’re on a train or airplane, or want to wipe the impurities away after a dip in the sea. We love Obagi’s Cleansing Wipes for a quick, on-the-go solution to cleansing and makeup removal.
Another travel-friendly way to cleanse, micellar water picks up dirt and oil without the need for rinsing. A must-have in your skincare travel kit if you won’t have access to running water, such as when you’re camping. If you’ll be staying in a hotel however, we’d recommend sticking with a proper face wash for a more thorough cleanse.
Hydrated skin is happy skin! Unfortunately, vacations are full of opportunities for it to get dry and flaky. Airplane cabin air is notoriously drying, while sun exposure, chlorinated pools and salty sea water can all sap away moisture.
Use an intensely-hydrating face serum and face cream just before flying, and consider making Murad’s Hydrate Trial Kit the basis of your travel skincare set – it contains AHAs and BHAs to exfoliate away the dead skin cells that can accumulate with dryness, and provides 24-hour hydration without feeling heavy or greasy.
Particularly on long-haul flights, moisturizing before you take off may not be enough to keep your skin looking dewy until you land. The easy fix? Include a hydrating face mist when you’re packing skincare for travel – a quick spritz will instantly quench thirsty skin, and can be applied on top of makeup. Not just great for flights, face mists are a wonderful addition to your beach bag too.
While we’re on the topic of hydration, sheet masks take up next to no space in your suitcase or carry-on, and are a great way to give dried-out skin an intense burst of hydration. Avène’s Soothing Sheet Mask is a redness-reducing lifesaver when you’ve stayed out in the sun a little too long! And the minimal mess compared to a regular face mask means you can even use a sheet mask during the flight if you want to.
Okay, one last note on hydration (because it really is important for beautiful skin!) and then we’ll change the topic: drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps your skin to stay hydrated from the inside out, for a radiant glow. Eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day is recommended in general, but if the temperatures are very high or you’re doing a lot of walking, you might need even more than that.
Pack a reusable water bottle into your suitcase – as well as being the sustainable choice, carrying it around with you will serve as a constant reminder to keep drinking.
No skincare travel set is complete without a sunscreen! Really, no daily skincare kit is complete without one, but never is it more important than when you’re off to spend a week sunning yourself on the beach, or going up into the mountains where you’re also exposed to more UVA and UVB than usual. You might therefore want to use a higher SPF than your usual while traveling, or need a formula that’s sweat-proof if you’re headed somewhere hot or plan to be pretty active, such as going hiking.
Traveling light, and want something you can bring in your hand luggage? We recommend the Coola Signature Classic Travel Kit Collection – all four products are in TSA-friendly sizing, and the included zip-close travel storage bag will no doubt come in handy while you’re on the move.

When it comes to a travel skincare routine, you’ll very likely need to make some changes compared to what you’d use at home, but it’s really not the best time to experiment with a complete overhaul of your skincare regimen. You’re already dealing with different water and a different climate, so to minimize the risk of your skin going into panic mode and having a breakout, keep what you can the same.
An easy way to do this is to buy miniatures of some of your existing products. Perhaps your favorite brand makes a travel size skincare set, or an ‘introductory’ sized one such as the Jan Marini Skin Care Management System Starter Kit, a smaller-sized version of their popular skincare kit.
A note on the previous point: this also means steering clear of the generic hotel-provided face wash! Chances are it won’t be designed for your skin type, or contain the best quality ingredients. And the same goes for hotel shampoos; if you want to keep your tresses glowing as well as your skin, it’s better to take your own high-quality shampoo and conditioner. For longer trips, you might even want to pack Olaplex’s Traveling Stylist Kit to repair damage caused by chlorine or sun exposure.
There are a few good reasons to pack your skincare travel kit in your hand luggage rather than your checked baggage: you have your moisturizers on hand if you need a hydration top-up during the flight; you don’t have to worry about lotions leaking all over your clothing; and if the worst happens and you arrive at your destination but your suitcase doesn’t, you’ve still got everything you need to keep your skin clean, healthy and beautiful.
Just be sure to check the relevant travel regulations to ensure you’ll be allowed to take your skincare products through security. For example, the TSA requires that individual product containers don’t exceed 3.4 ounces (this means can’t take a 4 ounce product even if it’s half empty). Having an expensive new face cleanser confiscated would certainly put a damper on the start of your vacation!
Unlike skincare, you probably won’t need to go out and buy new makeup products for your vacation. Perhaps just a darker shade of foundation if you know you tan deeply and quickly, or a mattifying powder if you’re headed to a more humid climate.
However, if you’re only taking hand luggage and need to maximize space, you might benefit from swapping your regular makeup bag full of products for a handful of multi-use ones. Some of our favorite multi-functional cosmetics for travel include the Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip & Cheek Stain and the double-ended Smashbox Studio Skin Shaping Foundation + Soft Contour stick, as well as all-in-one palettes such as the Jane Iredale Pure & Simple Makeup Kit (it even includes brushes!)
Packing skincare for travel needn’t be complicated. Cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer and sunscreen are the four basic steps of any skincare routine, and that doesn’t change when you go on vacation. However, you can trim down your travel skincare set by choosing an exfoliating cleanser (such as Jan Marini’s Bioglycolic Face Cleanser) plus a moisturizer with built-in sun protection (such as Supergoop’s Superscreen Daily Moisturizer). Voilà, four steps become two.
From there, you’ll probably want to add in an extra boost of hydration such as a serum, face mist, or sheet mask – if you get a touch of sunburn, swim in a chlorinated pool, or sleep in an air-conditioned room, your skin will thank you for it. But this is all you really need! Simple, right?

Products contain benzoyl, glycolic acid and sulfur to purge impurities, fight acne-causing bacteria and rebalance the skin, and with a generous 60-day supply, your giftee has plenty to keep them going until they see results.
Who wouldn’t love being treated to a luxury spa trip? However, if that’s outside of your budget, here’s the next best thing: SkinMedica’s 5-piece Stay Bright holiday skin care gift set. Designed especially to give skin a radiant glow, it includes a beautiful rose quartz roller which your giftee can continue to use with their other skincare products long after the included sheet masks and product duo are used up.
Prefer to build your own skin care gift baskets? This can be a great idea when you know multiple brands your giftee likes to use, or when you want to create a truly luxurious hamper with more than just skin care items in it.
Unsure what to choose? When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with the basic components of any skin care regimen: cleanser, exfoliator and moisturizer. From there, consider elevating it with extras they may not often buy for themselves, such as face mists and face masks.
And don’t forget about our excellent hair care section too. If your recipient is just as invested in having fabulous locks as they are in having fabulous skin, consider throwing in some products by Keratin Complex, Olaplex or Viviscal. ]]>The combination of dry air, harsh winds and overheated indoor spaces can wreak havoc on your complexion, as can the hot showers and baths that most of us like to indulge in over the colder months. Regardless of whether your skin type is usually dry or oily, in the depths of winter it’s not uncommon to find yourself dealing with excessive dullness, flakiness or irritation. The solution? A winter skincare routine that’s specifically tailored to this climate.
We’ve all been there: we finally found a product that really works for our skin, and we tell everyone we’re going to keep using it until the end of time. However, it’s important to remain adaptable! Our skincare needs change with the seasons, and a routine that leaves you glowing in summer might not be enough to keep the dullness or dryness away in winter.
While the summertime humidity does come with its downsides (hello, melting makeup), it does help to keep your skin nicely hydrated. Come winter, we’re faced with the opposite: dry air that sucks the moisture right out of our skin. And if you’re still following a summer-focused skincare regimen that’s light on moisture-trapping ingredients, your skin is going to suffer for it.
All of that said, it’s important to switch over to your winter skincare products slowly. Particularly if you have sensitive skin, it can react badly to a sudden change in routine. Plus, if you’re trying out new products for the first time, there’s always the risk that your skin won’t take too kindly to it. By introducing them one by one you’ll be able to tell exactly which product caused any breakouts or irritation.
Not all hydrating or moisturizing ingredients work in the same way. If you really want to step up your winter skincare game, knowing the differences between them will help you to navigate ingredients lists like a pro and work out what’s right for your skin type (since a dry skin vs. oily skin routine will still look different, even in winter).
Examples: hyaluronic acid, glycerine, urea, lactic acid.
Humectants attract water and bind to it, which means they draw water from the deeper layers of your skin to the surface, plus slow down the rate at which water from your skin evaporates away into the atmosphere. All skincare types will benefit from a winter skincare routine with lots of humectants!
Examples: ceramides, plant butters (e.g. shea butter), plant oils.
Emollients ‘fill in’ the gaps in your skin, plumping it up. They also contain fatty acids which don’t break down in water, so they create a barrier layer that traps any water-based products you applied underneath (and prevents environmental irritants from getting into your pores.) All skin types should be using emollient ingredients as part of their winter skincare routine, however certain emollients can cause oily skin to break out. If that’s you, be sure to look for a moisturizer that states it’s suitable for acne-prone skin.
Examples: squalane, lanolin, petroleum jelly, mineral oil, wax.
Occlusives function in a similar way to emollients, but are heavier and tend to have a greasy feel. They can be great in winter for those with extremely dry skin, but anyone with oily or combination skin should definitely steer clear. Occlusives can still be great for your arms, legs, hands or lips however (you’ll find that many lip balms include beeswax since it forms a protective film.)
No matter your age and no matter your skin type, here are the 8 products you absolutely need in your winter skincare routine:
If your skin feels tight after cleansing (which is more likely to happen with a foaming cleanser or one that’s clay-based), you’ve stripped away lots of moisture and that’s exactly what you don’t need during the winter. Instead, you want a cleanser that gently dissolves makeup and dirt while hydrating the skin. We recommend looking for a cleansing balm or cream, such as Eminence Wildflower Cleansing Balm which nourishes and hydrates via natural botanical oils.
A light gel moisturizer might be all you need in summer, especially if you have oily skin, but in winter it’s important to find a face moisturizer that will not only hydrate your skin but also lock that hydration in. Choose one with both humectants to attract water and emollients to keep it there. When it comes to skincare for winter, we love EltaMD Barrier Renewal Complex which is packed full of emollient ceramides as well as an enzyme blend which soothes dry, irritated skin.
The number one rule of winter skincare is: you can never have too much moisture! Go one step beyond using an excellent moisturizer, and give your skin an extra blast of hydration via a face serum, face oil, or face mist. The key with all of them is to apply it before your cream or lotion; not only will the moisturizer help to seal those ingredients in, but putting moisturizer onto pre-hydrated skin allows it to sink in deeper, for enhanced benefits.
While we’re on the topic of hydration, another fab way to keep your skin feeling soft and supple is to treat it to a weekly mask that’s packed full of nourishing, moisturizing ingredients. Our beauty experts are huge fans of Eminence Chocolate Mousse Hydration Masque, both for its divine chocolatey scent and the way it instantly revitalizes thirsty skin.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, which might otherwise dry up and turn flaky. Natural skin cell turnover tends to slow down in winter, making exfoliation extra important – especially for dry skin types! Stick to something mild so it doesn’t irritate skin that’s potentially already aggravated by the weather, such as Elemis Gentle Rose Exfoliator.
Sunburn-inducing UVB radiation may be much lower in winter, but there’s still more than enough UVA radiation around to cause premature aging. So don’t only include sunscreen in your winter vacation skincare collection for those times you’re headed off skiing; a facial sunscreen is something you should be wearing every day of the year. Period.
Even if you don’t use an eye cream in summer, it’s a really beneficial addition to your winter skincare routine. The skin around your eyes is thinner, meaning it’ll dry out even quicker than the rest of your face in the harsh winter weather. Try Derma E Hydrating Eye Cream if you’re on a budget, or Obagi Gentle Rejuvenation Ultra-Rich Eye Hydrating Cream if you’re happy to splurge on the very best.
Don’t forget about the skin on your lips! Our advice? Use two products: first apply a nourishing lip treatment such as Murad Soothing Skin & Lip Care, then lock it in with a layer of Vaseline. Remember to keep your lip balm handy so you can reapply it regularly through the day, and avoid licking your lips which will dry them out.
The best skincare for winter involves more than just the products you apply to your skin. Here are a few more winter skincare tips to keep you glowing when the temperatures plummet:
When you’re dehydrated, your skin becomes dehydrated. So drink plenty of water! If you struggle to remember, buy a cute bottle and keep it out on your desk so you’re constantly reminded of it.
Winter air can get dry inside the home too, especially if you have the heating turned up, so counteract this with a humidifier. Popping one on your nightstand is an excellent way to prevent your lips from drying out overnight.
Whether you’re cleansing your face or taking a shower, turn the temperature down a notch. Water that’s too hot will strip the natural moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and uncomfortable.
In winter, there’s nothing quite as relaxing as soaking in a warm tub. But you can make bathtime even better by adding a hydrating bath oil, which will leave your skin feeling silky soft. (If you’re a shower person, consider swapping out your usual body wash for a more hydrating formula, for a similar effect).
We hope you’ve found these skincare tips for winter useful. You can find all the products you need to build your perfect winter skincare routine here at Editors’ Pick, where you’ll benefit from free US shipping and returns, plus a generous rewards program. Happy shopping!]]>
Wrong. Even basic, unscented soaps can have wildly different ingredients depending on whether they’re liquid or solid, and while one may leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, another might leave it feeling tight and dry or cause a breakout. Add to that the fact you may need up to four different ones (for your face, body, hands, and for shaving), and selecting a soap begins to look a little trickier.
But don’t worry! Editors’ Pick is here to help you out with our guide to choosing the absolute best soap for you and your face or body.
Whether it’s a liquid hand soap or a facial soap bar, the basic recipe for soap is the same: some sort of fat or oil, plus an alkali. A liquid soap typically contains potassium hydroxide as its alkali, while a soap bar usually uses sodium hydroxide. The fat/oil part may come from plants, from animals, or from petroleum. A liquid soap is more likely to be petroleum-based and a bar soap plant or animal-based, but not always.
The bit you really need to know is this: bar soap often has a higher pH level than liquid soap, which can dry the skin out as well as exacerbate acne, psoriasis, and eczema. If you’re washing with a cheap hand soap bar you picked up at a budget motel, don’t be surprised if your skin is left feeling as tight as a brand new facelift. However, pH-balanced bar soaps do exist, and we’re big fans of Redken Brews Cleanse Bar Soap (it’s one of the best smelling men’s soaps around!)
Foaming hand soap or face soap is so fun – it’s like a mini bubble party every time! But is it effective?
The product inside a foam hand soap dispenser is really no different to a liquid hand soap refill; the bottle simply adds air to it when you pump. This helps your soap to go further, so the same quantity will last you longer.
Foaming facial cleansers on the other hand create a rich lather when you rub them in, and they do this thanks to the addition of a foaming agent. Here’s where you need to pay attention to the ingredients list. This foaming agent is very often sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These are very good at removing oil, but sometimes too good. They can really strip the skin, leaving it dry or irritated, so you may want to look for a foaming face or body wash that’s sulfate-free (natural foaming agent alternatives are less common but do exist).
Like foaming soaps, shaving soaps are designed to lather. The difference is in the properties of that lather – whereas cleansers have a thin, runny lather that’s easy to wash off, shaving soap has a very dense and creamy lather that sticks to the skin, so it won’t drip off before your razor gets there! It’s also deliberately slippery in texture, to help the blade glide across your skin.
Although we call them soaps, shaving soaps also aren’t really made for actual cleaning. They don’t strip oil away from your skin, with the best men’s shaving soap actually doing the opposite i.e. pumping it full of nourishing, moisturizing ingredients. In other words, keep your shaving bar soap strictly for shaving – it’s great, but not a substitute for a facial soap bar or liquid face wash!
Looking for recommendations on the best shaving soaps? At Editors’ Pick, we think the best shaving soap for men is The Art of Shaving Shaving Soap thanks to both its excellent lather and its skin-softening combination of glycerin, coconut oil and pure essential oils.
Usually just the fragrance! As far as cleansing power goes, a men’s hand soap or men’s bath soap is no different than women’s soap. So if you want to share with your other half on a weekend trip away, go right ahead. Just be aware, ladies, that if you use a strong smelling men’s soap, you’ll probably be left smelling like you borrowed his aftershave too. And that might not mix well with whatever perfume you planned to put on.
Once you’ve picked your preferred format (bar vs. liquid, and foaming vs. non-foaming), it’s time to consider your skin type. Or types! Maybe you’ll need a facial soap bar designed for oily skin but, especially in winter, a super-moisturizing ‘dry skin’ hand soap liquid or hand soap bar to counteract the drying effects of frosty weather.
Oily skin gets clogged up easily, so look for a clarifying soap to draw out all of the dirt and impurities. Soaps with clay or charcoal are a fabulous choice, such as the Baxter of California Deep Cleansing Charcoal Clay Bar (great for both face and body, and another of the best smelling soaps for men that we’ve come across) or The Seaweed Bath Co. Purifying Detox Facial Bar, a mild unscented soap which cleanses thoroughly but gently, to avoid aggravating inflammation.
Avoid using an exfoliating soap bar on your face; over exfoliation can increase oil production, so it’s generally not something you want to be doing to already-oily skin on a daily basis. That said, you may find it helps to cleanse your face (or body, if you’re dealing with bacne) with a formula that contains chemically-exfoliating salicylic acid, such as Epionce Purifying Wash.
Dry skin on the other hand needs regular exfoliation! As well as using a more intensive exfoliating scrub (for your body) or chemical exfoliator (for your face) a couple of times per week, you can indulge in a gentle exfoliation every time you wash with an exfoliating bar soap. With its unisex, woody scent, LOVE beauty AND planet Shea Butter & Sandalwood Soap Bar makes for an excellent women’s or men’s exfoliating soap. It’s a very moisturizing bar soap too thanks to the shea butter, which will help to soften your skin.
Other highly-moisturizing ingredients to look out for are glycerin, ceramides, and botanical oils such as coconut or almond.
Sensitive skin often doesn’t get on well with fragrances, so you may want to hunt down an unscented soap. Our favorite unscented body soap is The Seaweed Bath Co. Unscented Body Wash, while a great 2-in-1 face and body soap for those who prefer a bar format is the DHC Mild Soap.
We also love the L'Occitane Shea Milk Sensitive Skin Extra Rich Soap, which does contain fragrance but is still super gentle. For your hands, there’s the ever-popular Dove Nourishing Hand Wash. Again, this is not a fragrance free hand soap, but it is hypoallergenic and specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
It’s also a good idea to look for a pH balanced soap, to avoid upsetting the natural pH level of your skin. As for the choice between bar soap or body wash, even an unscented liquid hand soap or body soap usually contains preservatives. Waterless bar soaps however don’t need these synthetic chemicals to keep them fresh, so you’re less likely to find them irritating.
Body odor is caused when the bacteria on your skin break down protein molecules in your sweat, which releases an odor. A combination of deodorant and maintaining good hygiene by regularly washing your underarms and any other areas which get sweaty is the best solution, and any type of soap or body wash will do the trick.
However, you may find that using an antibacterial soap for body odor helps you to stay smelling fresh for longer. Ahava Mineral Botanic Velvet Cream Wash is a shower gel with hibiscus, which has natural antibacterial properties.
In a pinch, yes. But it’s not recommended. The skin on our bodies tends to be more robust, so a formula that works well on your body may irritate your face and cause a breakout.
Using a facial soap bar or wash for your body on the other hand tends to be safer, but may be pricey when you consider the amount of skin involved and the fact that the average facial cleanser is much more expensive per ounce than the average body wash. If you do want to keep your bathroom lotions and potions to a minimum, or want to travel light, we recommend finding a product that specifically states it can be used for both face and body.
You can apply bar soap directly, or with your hands. To really get all of the small nooks and crannies of your face clean, you’ll probably find it easiest to use your hands. First wet the soap and rub it between your palms to create a nice lather, then gently massage that lather into your skin for a good 30 seconds. Rinse off with clean water.
An exfoliating soap bar for the body is best applied directly to maximize the exfoliating effect. Before you lather up in the bath or shower, spend a couple of minutes pretending you’re in your home spa and simply enjoying the warm water against your skin – it will open up all of your pores. Then clean from the top down, so dirty, sudsy water isn’t dripping down onto bits you’ve already cleaned.
Once done, be sure to store your soap bar somewhere that it can dry out. If you leave it lying in a pool of water, it will dissolve into a mushy mess!
However, if your shaving soap bar, face/body bar soap, or liquid soap still looks and smells okay, you can still use it safely. To prolong the lifespan of your unopened soaps, store these bathroom products at room temperature (not too close to any radiators!) and out of direct sunlight.

Alongside bacne, cellulite and stretch marks are often two of the biggest hangups people have when it comes to summertime dressing a.k.a. flaunting way more of our skin in public than we ever normally would. The good news is, you can do something about them. The bad news is, there’s no miracle overnight cure for either.
The results from anti-cellulite products and stretch mark or scar treatments build over time, so start using these products as early as possible if these ‘flaws’ are likely to make you feel self-conscious in your swimwear. We particularly love the NuFace NuBody toning device for minimizing cellulite, and remember, while many stretch mark treatments are aimed at new moms (such as the Mama Mio Goodye Stretch Marks), they still work even if yours aren’t due to pregnancy!
A good-to-know tip: only reading this a week before your vacation? For cellulite, look for a product with caffeine such as the Dr. Brandt Cellusculpt cream, which will deliver an instant – albeit only temporary – reduction in dimples by tautening the skin.
Haven’t treated your skin to a nice, exfoliating scrub for a while? There’s no better time to start than right now! Exfoliating your skin sloughs away the dead cells which are making it look dull and feel rough, plus stimulates skin cell turnover for a smoother, more radiant-looking new you. It can even help to reduce body acne.
While your skin will likely feel softer immediately after a gentle scrub, it’ll take a few repetitions to see the full effects so be sure to start a week or two ahead of your beach trip. Better still, make it a permanent part of your body care routine – exfoliating 2-3 times per week ensures you’ll have smooth, glowing skin year round, and who doesn’t want that?
One of our top beach safety tips for those of you who love to look bronzed? Fake tan! If you arrive to the beach already tanned and glowing, you’ll be less tempted to skimp on the sunscreen or spend too long sunbathing to try to build up your tan.
A day or two before your beach outing is the perfect time to apply a fake tan; any earlier than that and it may already have begun to fade. Exfoliate your skin the day before to reduce streakiness (smooth skin = smooth application) and right before applying, lightly moisturize any dry areas such as elbows and knees to prevent them soaking up more color than the rest of you.
You can exfoliate and self-tan all you like, but if your skin is dry, it won’t be glowing! Plus, you’re about to expose it to the drying heat of the sun and the skin-stripping effects of salty water (or a chlorinated pool), so get ahead of the game by ensuring it’s extra hydrated and moisturized before you head outdoors.
Try a two-layer approach: begin with a hydrating formula (we’re mega fans of iS Clinical Body Complex, which contains hyaluronic acid to hold onto water), then apply a moisturizer on top which will create a barrier, sealing this water in. Good, barrier-forming ingredients to look out for in a body moisturizer are ceramides, botanical oils (e.g. coconut oil or avocado oil), and botanical butters such as shea butter.
It’s a good idea to pack a hydrating mist in your beach bag too so you can top back up throughout the day as needed. We recommend Derma E Hydrating Mist because you can use it on your body and face, and rather than messing up your makeup, it’ll actually help to set it.
If you only put one product from this entire article on your skin this summer, let it be sunscreen! We don’t need to tell you that sunburn or, worse, skin cancer is no one’s idea of a fabulous vacation souvenir. And neither are wrinkles or age spots. A sunscreen protects your skin from all of the above, allowing you to enjoy the beach and the summer sunshine responsibly. Just remember to apply it at least 15 minutes before sun exposure so it has time to take effect.
Sun Bum Mineral SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen is a great, budget-friendly sunscreen for women who want a little skin enhancement without needing to wear makeup to the beach. Do want to wear makeup? A sunscreen setting spray such as the Coola Classic Makeup Setting Spray helps to prevent it melting under the summer sun while also providing UV protection. A stick format meanwhile is an excellent sunscreen for men and women alike who frequently find themselves with sandy hands, and hence need a sunscreen they can rub in ‘hands free’. We like Sun Bum Original SPF 30 Sunscreen Face Stick.
Specifically looking for sunscreen that doesn’t burn eyes when you apply it to your cheeks, and which won’t irritate delicate skin types? The best facial sunscreen for sensitive skin is, in our opinion, the Glo Solar Shade sunscreen which has zero fragrances or dyes.
Oh, and if you’re planning to swim, or just know you’ll be sweating buckets, be sure to pick a waterproof sunscreen such as MISSHA Water Proof Sun Milk, which can be used on the face and body (and at 70ml, is a great travel sunscreen that can go through airport security in your hand luggage). Even if your sunscreen is waterproof however, it’s still a sensible idea to reapply it after bathing, after drying off with a towel, and just generally every couple of hours. Once in the morning is not enough!
It’s also important to apply sunscreen to every part of your skin that is exposed – don’t forget about areas such as your hands, feet, ears, and so on. And while we’re on the topic of beach safety tips, remember that even with sunscreen on, doctors and dermatologists recommend you avoid the sun during the hottest hours of the day. So if you care about your skin (and, you know, not getting skin cancer), cover up with a kaftan, hat and giant sunglasses when the sun is at its highest, or just stay in the shade.
Keep that beautiful glow going into the evening by repeating these steps from earlier, to replenish all of the water your skin has lost.
You can use your regular body lotions and creams, but if your skin feels especially parched, you may be better off choosing targeted after sun skincare products. These are formulated to not only hydrate (a lot!) but also cool, calm and repair your skin. If you’re feeling a little baked, aloe vera is a particularly soothing ingredient your skin will thank you for. If you got burnt burnt, using after sun products also helps to prevent or lessen peeling.
We’ve told you everything you should put on your skin as part of a beach skincare routine. But there are also a few ingredients you should steer clear of shortly before you go.
Whether it’s at home or at the salon, avoid using anything which contains retinol (vitamin A) or AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid) since these will temporarily make your skin more sensitive to sun damage. Especially the high-strength acids used in professional skin peels! If you’re going for a facial and aren’t sure what the ingredients are, just ask your skincare technician about when you can go back in the sun and any precautions you may need to take.
Another ingredient to watch out for is hydroquinone, used for lightening skin discoloration. It works by blocking melanin production, and since melanin is what naturally protects your skin from the sun, this can leave you more susceptible than usual to UV radiation.

It used to be so simple; you could walk into a store and just buy whatever hair spray they had and that was that. Now, there’s hair enhancement spray made especially for curly hair, for straight hair, for natural hair, for colored hair… So where do you even begin?
Well, it’s important to use hair spray that’s appropriate to the look you want to create. The one you use when wearing your hair down should be different from the one you use to keep an ‘up do’ fixed in position. Why? Because if you choose too strong a hold for loose locks, you’ll struggle to brush them! And no one wants their hair to look and move like it’s a block of Lego.
If you’re looking for a way to just tame your pesky flyaways, a light hold, anti humidity hair spray is the option for you. It won’t weigh your hair down or make it feel stiff – it just keeps everything neatly in place. It’s great because it allows you to brush and restyle your hair through the day, just in case you want to change your look from a daytime do to a glam style come nighttime.
Wondering how to use hair finishing spray correctly? Always keep your hair spray bottles around 30cm from your head (not too close!) and use short bursts to build it up slowly, so you don’t accidentally overload your hair and turn it into a sticky mess.
Try this one: Flex Flow Hair Spray by Keratin Complex. (Side note: if you have yet to discover Keratin Complex’s hair-smoothing products, you’re missing out! Oh, and Olaplex is a must for seriously smooth locks too. But I’m getting side-tracked.)
If your hair takes a little bit more effort to tame it in, you could go for the next step up in hold which would be medium hold hair spray. This will give you control and bounce while also giving you a sleek look. It’s great for casual up-dos such as buns and ponytails. I personally LOVE the Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium because it’s lightweight, smells amazing, and my hair style will last all day.
Of course, the other option out there is extra hold hair spray. It’s spray just like they made it back in the 80s, only with much-improved formulas that won’t leave your locks feeling crunchy and heavy. Looking for a hair curl spray after using your curling wand, for example? This option’s great if you have heavily-styled down dos (such as vintage-esque curls) that you’d like to keep in place all day. The wind is no match for this hold and even Beyoncé would be jealous of your structured look.
You can also use this hair spray to assist you with your up-dos by spraying some onto your comb and brushing your strands into place. Bonus: it’ll add gorgeous shine! My recommendations? You could ball on a budget with my favorite Redken hair spray, Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray, or go for hair so smooth it reflects the light with Tigi’s seriously firm-control hair shine spray Masterpiece Shine Hairspray.
Want a look that’s relaxed, yet not flat and lifeless? Whether you’re going for beachy waves on long hair or a sexy tousled look on short hair, hair wax spray is another option. Spray hair wax is a lighter-hold type of hair spray, but the difference between this and non-wax options is that this one adds a bit of ‘gritty’ texture, which gives your hair some shape.
Here’s how to use texturizing spray on short hair: take relatively small sections at a time, twist, and spritz on your sexy hair texturizing spray. The longer your hold the twists before releasing, the more defined the result will be. And on long hair? For well-defined waves, braid your hair before spraying it on. Once fully dry, undo your braids and voilà, instant waves! For a messier look, simply spray and scrunch.
Do you use texture spray on wet or dry hair? For the twisting or scrunching techniques I’ve just described, it’s best to stick to dry hair. For the braiding technique, wet hair works too – just be sure to add the hair spray before braiding in that case.
Wondering how to use hair spray for volume? Let me shout it loud and proud: LIVING PROOF DRY VOLUME AND TEXTURE SPRAY. This product, ladies and gentlemen, should get an Emmy.
First of all, it smells incredible so you don’t need to smell like a straight-up aerosol can anymore. And not only does it give you volume when there wasn’t before, but it adds heat protection for your hair. (Let’s be honest you guys, no matter how hard we try to not apply heat to our hair, we’re all guilty. So that added protection is a god-send.)
This hair spray also absorbs oil in the hair so it can act like a dry shampoo. And as if that weren’t enough, you can use it on both wet and dry hair, it’s amazing for all hair types, and it’s not too pricey so you get salon-worthy results without breaking the bank. Is there anything else you could want from a hair product? I didn’t think so.
Speaking of volume, if you have thinner hair – or, you know, thinning hair – it’s important to steer clear of product that will weigh you down. Otherwise, your style will end up going flat and that is not the vibe. It’s all about fluff and volume now so you want a product that’s going to give your hair life. The best hair spray for fine or thinning hair is a lightweight one that still adds volume and texture such as Boldify Hair Thickening Spray, an alcohol free hair spray that creates bigger, bouncier hair without leaving a heavy residue.
So now that we have texture and hold levels covered, let’s finish with something fun. GLITTER.
Glitter hair spray is the new necessity. It’s the perfect accessory to any going-out outfit and adds that je ne sais quoi to your look. You can spray it on your body or even your clothes to make the ‘fit really special. Really, just go wild with the glitter spray for hair that lets your inner Y2K shine! Oh, but remember to hold the hair spray bottle at a distance so the result doesn’t look patchy.
And if sparkle hair spray isn’t bold enough for you, remember there’s always temporary color hair spray. Pick up a bottle of red hair spray, green hair spray, black hair spray, brown hair spray, or maybe even silver hair spray, and unleash your creativity! And who says you need to stick to one? Mix together colored spray for hair that’s stripy, ombré, or patterned with a stencil (leopard print hair is a look.)

There are so many options out there now, it can get overwhelming. But the good thing is that there are amazing stylists and experts out there who can help you choose the best product for you. If you follow their advice, such as choosing the the products I’ve suggested here, I promise you’ll be rocking gorgeous styles that will look beautiful and last you all day long.]]>The perfect summer skin care routine for you will depend on your skin type. Oily and dry skin types face different types of challenges when the mercury rises, so below we’re sharing some must-know summer skin care tips plus two example routines to make this summer (and all summers to come!) your best skin days ever. But first, let’s go over the absolute basics which should be in your summer skincare kit no matter your complexion or skin type.
Sun protection
When it comes to skincare dos and don’ts, sunscreen is always a do. Any dermatologist will tell you that you should be wearing sunscreen year round, but of course it’s most crucial of all on those bright, cloudless summer days when you’re receiving increased UV exposure. And it’s not just about preventing skin cancer either – sun exposure can also lead to premature aging and hyperpigmentation issues.
Body sunscreens are typically too ‘heavy’ to use on your face and might lead to breakouts, so pick a lighter-weight formula developed specifically for facial use. Sunscreen needs topping up every few hours to stay effective, so it can be helpful to choose a mist or powder version for top-ups which you can easily apply over makeup. Not planning to wear foundation? A tinted sunscreen is a great way to subtly enhance your skin tone.
How can we protect your skin in summer besides using sunscreen? Invest in some fabulously oversized sunnies plus a chic, wide-brimmed hat which will shade much of your face and match with all your summer outfits. Limiting how much UV light lands on your skin is the best sun protection of all!
Moisturizer
With summer air less dry than winter air, it can be tempting to skimp on this step, especially if your main summer skincare focus is staying matte. But your skin needs proper hydration just as much as the rest of you. Plus, thirsty skin will produce extra oil to compensate, making you look shiny rather than fresh and dewy.
The solution is to have a separate moisturizer for summer and winter. While in winter, our skin craves deeply-quenching creams and oils, the best summer moisturizer is very lightweight – think a runny liquid or a gel consistency. Try out a few testers at the local mall to see which ones really sink into your skin, versus those that leave a ‘film’ on top.
What’s a good skin care routine in summer for oily skin? It’s all about going easy on your skin. By that, we mean lightweight hydration, gentle (and not too regular!) cleansing, and careful exfoliation. We’ve already discussed what to look for in a moisturizer for summer, but for oily skin in particular, search out sebum-controlling ingredients such as salicylic acid and niacinamide.
Now… what’s this about infrequent face washing?! Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you stop cleansing. You should still wash your face morning and night, something that’s especially important if you’re prone to blemishes. However, when your skin feels extra oily or sweaty in summer, it can be tempting to give it a mid-day wash or two too. Don’t do it! This will actually strip your skin of essential hydration which can exacerbate acne and oil production, so if your skin is starting to reflect that sunlight a bit too much, simply use blotting sheets instead. Bonus: they won’t mess up your makeup!
After cleansing, use a toner which helps to shrink open pores, controlling excessive oiliness. A particularly good summer toner for oily skin is Thayer’s Original Witch Hazel Toner.
Now, exfoliation. Over-exfoliating also ‘strips’ the skin which can ramp up oil production, however it also helps to unclog pores and improve moisture absorption. So the key is balance. For oily skin, we recommend exfoliating once, or at most twice, per week.
Day – Gentle cleanser, toner, 2-in-1 moisturizer and sunscreen (to minimize number of products on skin), mattifying powder sunscreen for later top-ups.
Night – Gentle cleanser, toner, water-based moisturizer.
1-2 times weekly – Gentle exfoliator.
Suffering from dry skin in summer? A good summer routine for you revolves around ensuring your skin receives plenty of hydration throughout the day to combat water loss from evaporation, so it’s a great idea to pop a hydrating face mist into your purse which you can spritz on whenever your skin starts to feel a bit parched.
Even with dry skin, you’ll likely find that a lighter-weight day moisturizer is best compared to the one you’d use in winter, to avoid your makeup sliding off. Look out for deeply-hydrating and soothing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera. You can still use a richer cream as part of your summer night routine if your skin needs it, as well as add an intensive hydrating serum and/or face mask into your skincare regimen for an extra blast of moisture.
When it comes to cleansing, micellar water is great for dry skin. It lifts dirt and oil from the skin without the need to rinse with water, helping skin to stay plump and hydrated. A bonus tip is to keep your showers cool. Not only will it feel wonderfully refreshing, but it will help to prevent your skin from becoming overly dried out.
Finally, a good exfoliator is absolutely vital to your summer routine. Dry skin in particular requires regular exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and avoid looking dull or flaky, although overdoing it can dry the skin out further. So use a gentle face scrub or chemical exfoliator about two to three times per week. And if you’re wondering how to get summer ready skin all over, don’t forget to make exfoliation part of your regular body skin care at home too, for skin that’s soft and glow-y from head to toe.
Day – Micellar water cleanser, hydrating toner, lightweight moisturizer, sunscreen, hydrating face mist (preferably with SPF) for moisture top-ups through the day.
Night – Micellar water cleanser, hydrating toner, hydrating serum, night cream.
2-3 times weekly – Gentle exfoliator, hydrating face mask.
Regardless of whether your skin is dry or oily, it can be difficult to keep your makeup in place during the summer months. As the seasons change, you’ll probably find it helps to modify your makeup routine as well as your skincare one. Here are our top summer beauty tips for sweat-proofing your makeup:
Your makeup will move around in summer, but the less you have sitting on top of your skin, the less obvious it will be. For example, instead of using a moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation, look for a 3-in-1 tinted moisturizer with SPF. If sheer coverage is not enough, replace the foundation and sunscreen steps with a colored mineral powder sunscreen. Go easy on products such as concealer, highlighter and eyeshadow too.
Not only does primer help to blur out imperfections and wrinkles, but it also ‘grabs onto’ your makeup to make it last much longer. Plus, it’ll help to prevent makeup settling into creases such as on your eyelids, so invest in a good eye makeup primer too if you can’t bear to give up shadow.
Sweat is mostly just water, meaning waterproof versions of your favorite makeup products are less likely to wear off on hot days. No one’s idea of cool summer makeup involves panda eyes or mascara that needs reapplying by lunchtime, and this swap is an easy solution.
A setting spray or setting powder does exactly what it says on the tin. If you have oily skin, the powder will also help to keep your skin matte; just remember that you only want a fine layer for summertime. On dry skin, powder can end up looking cake-y so choose a spray instead.

]]>Wondering how to use hair spray to achieve those pro-like results? From how to use hair spray for volume to tips for creating fabulous texture or healthy shine, sit tight because we’re going to explain absolutely everything you need to know about this hair styling essential. Ready?
Is your hair looking a bit limp and lifeless? Then get yourself a sexy hair texture spray and literally spritz the problem away! Texturizing sprays come in many different varieties. Some are all about accentuating your hair’s natural shape, while others help you to create a new shape such as getting beautiful beachy waves from straight hair.
Unlike traditional hairspray, texturizing spray doesn’t ‘fix’ your hair into position. However, the added texture gives your strands a bit of grip, which will help hairstyles such as braids and buns stay in place for longer. It can also help bangs to stay up and away from your face instead of constantly falling over your eyes.
Do you use texture spray on wet or dry hair? That really depends on the brand and the specific product; we recommend checking the instructions on the hair spray bottle.
Straight hair needs volume and texture too! By applying a sexy hair texturizing spray at the roots, you can give your locks a bit of lift so that they frame your face nicely instead of just hanging flat around it. Pick up sections of dry hair (after flat-ironing if necessary) and spray from below along the full length of the hair. As you drop each section, use your hands to gently push the hair up and into the desired position.
Ever wonder what hair spray barbers use to get very short hair to look purposefully styled? Sometimes it’s a heavier product such as spray hair wax which can create fun, spiky looks and also gives the hair excellent shine; other times it’s a light texturizing spray for a more natural look. For the latter, hold the bottle an arm’s length from your hair and spray it all over, then use your fingers to ‘rough it up’ a bit to create that nice, tousled look.
If your hair is especially fine and flat, then a texturizing hair spray may not be enough. Instead, you’ll want a volumizing hair spray. These typically work in one of two ways (sometimes both). Either they include polymers to temporarily stiffen the hair strands, so that they stay up away from your scalp. Or they contain humectants to draw moisture into the strand, swelling it up for a fuller look.
Similarly to texturizing sprays, you want to spray the hair from below – it can help to flip your head upside down. For volume however, concentrate primarily on the roots since you want to create lift right next to the scalp.
So, what’s the best hair spray for fine hair? We’re huge fans of Boldify Hair Thickening Spray. It uses natural ingredients such as Epsom salt and algae extract to amp up hair thickness without weighing it down or leaving a residue that’s hard to get rid of.
And if your hair is visibly thinning? While volumizing sprays can help to disguise that, you can also go one step further and try a hair filler spray which literally fills in the gaps. Boldify Hair Thickening Fibers look completely natural, and come in numerous shades to match the rest of your tresses.
Perfect for parties, hair glitter spray or spray color will make you stand out like never before! Plus, whether you choose a natural color such as black hair spray or brown hair spray, or something much more daring such as green hair spray, it can be a really fun way to experiment with a different hair color without committing.
Why not use a pink or red hair spray on just the tips for example, or create some colorful highlights? Sparkle hair spray is generally a subtler option than color – unless you use a lot of it! Then it’s perfect for festivals, especially when paired with eye and cheek glitter.
Note that if you’re spraying on a much lighter color, you’ll need a lot of product and it probably won’t look all that natural. Not such an issue if you’re using metallic silver hair spray to complete your futuristic party look, or gray hair spray for a costume party you’re attending as someone’s grandma, but worth knowing about in case you were hoping to use blonde hair spray color as a brunette. For that, a wig might be a better option!
How to use hair color spray? The important thing is to avoid holding it too close to your head while spraying. That will overload the hair with product, creating a sticky mess. Instead, hold it at least four inches away from your hair (but still close enough to be able to aim at the particular strand you’re targeting) and spray in short bursts to build up the color gradually. Be sure to cover your shoulders with a towel before you start too, to avoid staining your clothing.
Hair finishing sprays are typically designed for hold. In other words, they’ll keep your cute fishtail braid looking neat and tidy, or your fancy occasion up-do from falling down. As the name suggests, you spray these on right at the end, once you’re done styling your hair.
Different hairstyles will require different levels of hold. If you’re wearing your hair down in, say, beachy waves, a lightweight finishing spray will help to keep those gentle waves from going limp. If you’ve used a curler to turn straight locks into ringlets however, you’ll need something stronger. Surface Curls Frizz Free Spray Gel for example is a fantastic hair curl spray for this, being a hair gel spray which will freeze those curls in place. The more complicated the hair-do or the further it is from your natural style, the stronger the hold you’ll want.
Some finishing sprays maintain your style in other ways, or otherwise enhance it. An anti-humidity hair spray for example will coat the hair to lock out moisture, preventing frizz, while shine spray for hair (such as the Shine Flash Redken hair spray, or Shine Spray by Keratin Complex) will give it a beautiful glossy finish. You can even get ‘sunscreen’ hair sprays which prevent UV light from fading your color.
Whatever type of hair styling or hair finishing spray you decide is right for you, if you use any heat styling tools such as a curling iron or flat iron, one spray type you definitely need is a heat protectant. In fact, even if you just blow dry your hair, you should have this. Spray it onto the hair immediately before heat styling to minimize broken hair bonds and other heat-related damage.
Our recommendation for the best heat protectant spray for curly hair and straight hair alike? The Redken hair spray Extreme Play Safe is a strong contender, since it protects your locks up to 450°F! We also love Iron Shape 11 Thermal Holding Spray by the same brand, which is a 3-in-1 heat protectant, style-fixing spray, and hair shine spray.
Haven’t been using a heat protectant to date, and it shows? While adding one to your routine will reduce further damage, it won’t undo what’s already been done. The good news is you can treat your hair with a restorative treatment such as Keratin Complex to fix the breakage!
As with any hair or skin care product, it’s always a good idea to check the ingredients list for any ‘nasties’, particularly in products you’ll be using regularly. You don’t want your hair enhancement spray to make your hair briefly look better, but require more products to look good in the long term!
What should you be avoiding? Sulfates are known for drying out hair, plus can leach out color if your hair is dyed. An alcohol-free hair spray will also be less drying. And while phthalates are sometimes added to hair sprays to reduce stiffness, they may interfere with endocrine hormones which can in turn affect the hair growth cycle, potentially leading to hair loss.
As for figuring out whether the hair spray actually works? Whether you’re researching the best temporary color hair spray or you’re shopping for a firm-hold hair wax spray, checking reviews remains one of the best ways to see if it lives up to its promises.
At Editors’ Pick, we stand behind the quality of our products. If you try a new hair spray and don’t love it, you can return your purchase within 30 days for a no-quibble refund, and you don’t even have to pay to ship it back! Read our returns policy for more information.
]]>In the following sections, we’ll break down how to pick the best hair care gift sets for that someone special in your life. Let’s get started, shall we?
It's always best to do some research before choosing the hair product gift set you plan to gift someone with. One idea is to speak to a close friend or family member of the recipient for a good idea of what they might like. That generally gives you enough information to select a gift that will be very on target and appreciated by the recipient.
Here is some of the information you want to gather before actually swiping that credit card:
Dry hair, brittle strands, hair fall, frizziness, dullness, or a flaky/oily scalp—the problems we face with our hair are endless. Think about the hair type and challenges your gift recipient faces to figure out what type of hair care gift they will appreciate.
For example, does the recipient deal with persistent issues you’re already aware of, such as thinning or balding hair? In that case, Viviscal products and kits will make a great hair care gift set. Their product range is vast and includes indulgent conditioners, elixirs, supplements, and shampoos, all formulated to encourage hair growth.
If your friend loves coloring their hair but has exhausted all options to care for it, then Redken’s Nature + Science Color Extend range will help them maintain their colored tresses for longer with fewer visits to the salon.
When treating brittle, lackluster hair, we’re big fans of brands such as Olaplex. Their range of hair care products is formulated to effectively restore the health of compromised hair by focusing on repairing bonds and preventing Cysteic acid formation. Whether it’s heat, mechanical, environmental, or chemical damage, Olaplex’s gift set promises (and delivers!) improved hair health. Few of us have truly perfect hair, so the award-winning Olaplex brand serves as an excellent starting point for hair care gifts for any hair type under the sun!
Casually discuss your hair needs with the recipient, to see if they share information about her own hair care concerns. This will give you some good ideas on what their hair care needs are, and hence what type of gift will be appreciated and put to good use. This move is sneaky but effective!
Let’s say you discover how often they color their hair and which products they swear by. You’ll find that maintaining and caring for colored hair (especially bleached tresses) is tricky and time-consuming. This may tell you to choose a blonde hair care gift set, for example, which includes products that aim to restore the health of pre-lightened, compromised hair.
Many people prefer not to spend too much time on a complex hair care routine. They like to keep things simple and basic. For such recipients, ask subtle questions to get a sense of their preferences. Then, look for low-maintenance gift options that will give your recipient good hair results without necessitating a huge amount of time and effort.
Oil-based treatment options have many benefits, and they don’t often require a lot of time to apply. They come particularly handy for those with frizzy, fragile, and over-styled hair. How about gifting your recipient with a hair oil gift set that encourages easy care for their mane? It’s a fantastic choice to help them see how easy it is to make a big difference in their hair’s appearance.
You can also explore hair care accessories as gift options. A hairbrush set, chic accessory, or new release of a hair styling tools may be just the thing your recipient will enjoy.
You can buy pre-packaged gift sets that come in limited edition or holiday-themed packs. Or, you can buy individual products from across different categories, and gift wrap them in a box or basket yourself. Adding a creative spin to the process makes the idea of gift-giving so much more special.
If you’re unsure about what your recipient likes or if you prefer they pick out products themselves, a gift certificate to your favorite cosmetic store is a good option which allows you to know your money is being well-spent. They’re also a great choice if you want to split costs with friends, family, or coworkers.
Giving someone a gift can happen at any time of the year. But, it’s nice to keep track of special occasions and major life wins that are worth celebrating. Wondering when’s a good time to consider buying hair care gift sets? Read on to find out what some good gifting moments are.
We LOVE prepping for holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Mother’s Day when the excitement of gift-giving is high. It’s nice to shop in advance after you’ve done some stealth research so that you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Remember, things quickly run out of stock, so it’s best to start shopping weeks ahead of time.
Major milestones like starting a business or buying a new home deserve to be celebrated. Gifting someone at this time is not only thoughtful and sweet but also kind and supportive.
Special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries are the perfect time to spoil someone with hair care gift sets. These packs are usually curated with bestsellers or customer favorites, making them a failsafe pick for anyone.
Does your BFF live in a different city or far away? Do you miss your partner when they’re out of town? It’s nice to let them know they’re in your thoughts when they’re miles away, by sending them a cool and unexpected gift.
Encourage someone to get started on a good hair care routine that they’ve been putting off by giving them hair product gift sets they’re sure to love.
The best part about hair care gift sets is that they tend to cost less than individually sold full-sized products. A hair gift pack also frequently comes in cute packaging, making it perfect for gift giving. Hair product gift sets can cost anywhere between $10 to $100, or more, depending on the volume of the products.
We suggest picking a gift based on the occasion and how much you’re willing to spend in one go. If you’re a regular gift giver, it’s smarter to work with a budget of $25 to $40 so that you’re not financially uncomfortable with the idea of gifting. You’ll also find that shopping during seasonal or promotional sales can help you save big on hair care gift sets.
A hair gift set sale also lets you buy from luxury brands at a steal instead of full price. Keep track of major sales throughout the year and not just around the holidays for the best steals.
Don’t forget to add a little note of appreciation for the recipient to read. This gives your gift a personal touch, and makes it all that more meaningful. It’s not just about the joy of giving, but also the joy of contributing to the recipient’s sheer happiness with long-lasting words of appreciation which warm the heart long after the gift has been used up.
It’s best to let recipients know where you ordered the gift set from so that they have an option for exchange, if they want to swap it for another product. Exchanges and returns are often possible, depending on the product type or reason for return. ]]>When it comes to having gorgeous, on-trend hair this year, it seems that what's old is new again—though there's still something fun and exciting about seeing a style you know and love take on a new life.
The key hair color trends for 2022 are all about making your hair look bold and beautiful, and include everything from artsy ombrés to subtler styles. So whether you're after a low maintenance hair color or you’re ready to go all-out with your next look, read on to find out which 2022 hair color trends might work for you – as well as what to do if you try a new look and decide you don’t like it!
It's time to do away with your winter hair colors and embrace new hair color trends. Summer is the time to welcome in a lighter, brighter color palette, so naturally there’s always a tendency towards vibrant hair color ideas in the warmer months. However, when it comes to eye-catching hair color 2022 is doing it bigger and better than ever before. All-over color is no longer the stand-out statement it once was – this year, mixing multiple colors is where it’s at!
The only problem? These spring and summer hair color trends 2022 are so hot, we can't imagine how you'll keep your cool:
Ombré is back! And this time, it packs a punch. Expect to see lots of fun hair colors such as neon in ombré this year, plus many people opting for pastel shades and a little glitter. If you've been waiting to bring this two color hair back into your life, now is the perfect time.
The key with unique hair colors such as this is to keep things light and soft so that you're not overwhelmed by your own hair color. Let your natural hair color fade to green, blue, or purple with these trendy dyes, or pick two completely new shades and experiment with half and half hair color ideas.
Now, let's talk about the hidden hair color trend i.e. one hair color under another. What's hot now? Maximum contrast! Think black hair with a streak of blonde hair color underlayer, or vice versa.
Black hair with blonde underneath or blonde hair, black underneath may seem like a drastic change, but the under color hair doesn’t always have to be visible. If you try out black and blonde hair ideas (even go one step further with black hair with white underneath), you can experiment with showing more or less of the under color through different hair styles, such as straight versus wavy and up versus down.
If monochromatic isn’t your vibe, there are plenty of other colorful hair ideas that you can put underneath your hair. Why not try shimmering bronze hair color as an underdye hair color, for example? Or other vibrant hair color ideas such as pink or purple. Whatever the color hair underneath, you will undoubtedly attract attention when you pull your hair back into a ponytail or bun and reveal it!
Last but not least is the biggest of all hair color 2022 trends: balayage. This color trend has been around for years, but it's still going strong and for very good reason. We love balayage because it adds beautiful dimension without over-processing your hair. This look blends your natural hair color with highlights or lowlights that stand out more at the ends of your strands.
For a natural look, choose a shade that complements your current color. For example, if you have blonde hair, try adding soft caramel or honey tones for an elegant and understated look. Want to try some new hair color trends that are popular within balayage right now? For brunettes and redheads, we recommend going all-out with this trend by adding ribbons of lavender or aquamarine throughout, or throw in some pink or purple highlights.
If you're looking for a younger look (who isn't?), you’ll want to focus on warm hues such as caramel, honey, gold, copper, and strawberry. These colors are bright without being harsh or garish, and they'll give you a healthy glow that will instantly make your complexion look more youthful. Not only do these shades give your beautiful hair a healthy brightness, but they also make you look like you just got back from a relaxing vacation!
If you're really feeling brave and want to make a bold statement, you can try bright blue or green front hair dyed ideas, or place this colored hair under or on top of your natural color as we’ve already suggested.
If you’re not keen on bright colors but still want to be noticed, the platinum blonde 2022 trend may be for you. Though note that this is very much not a low maintenance hair color!
Finally, this year we're seeing a lot of sunset shades, oranges and yellows in particular. These bright hair color ideas are not only a bold choice, but they are a really versatile shade as well. Subtle pinks and knock-your-socks-off red are also going to trend!
If your skin is your biggest beauty concern, it can be difficult to feel confident or excited about new hair color trends. We've all been there—you see a shade you love on someone else, but as soon as you try to replicate it on yourself, you wonder what could possibly have possessed you to choose such a look.
The key to finding a color that works for you goes beyond just picking a shade that matches your skin tone. Instead, use thoughtful color placement and lighter shades to draw attention away from skin concerns such as blemishes and dark circles. Bright colored hair ideas are the go-to color options for this.
In particular, lighter summer highlights are great for framing your face because they allow you to keep your natural base color but still draw attention away from any imperfections. Though it may sound counterintuitive at first, adding lighter-colored highlights around your face can actually help create an attractive framing effect which draws the eye away from any problem areas on the face, and toward the brighter colors in your hair. And if it turns out that you love the new look? You can easily move forward with a full head of highlights or even lighten all of your hair.
This technique is also great for anyone who has trouble deciding between warm hair colors or cool hair color shades—by adding both warm highlights and cool lowlights around the face, you can subtly blend colors together in a way that will really make your features pop!
If you're thinking about changing up your hair color, we've put together a list of statistics on the most popular colors to get you inspired.
For the last few years, platinum blonde has been reigning supreme among Americans looking to switch up their hair color. But that's not all—redheads are also on the rise.
While blonde and brunette still rank as the most common hair colors, red has been rising in popularity since 2008, when it ranked as the 6th most popular color. As of 2015, red is the 3rd most common hair color.
It turns out that summer blonde hair is more fun—at least in America! Blonde was reported as the most popular hair color in every state. So, if you want to be in good company, try switching your locks to a bright platinum-blonde hue.
Are you researching different hair color brands and wondering, is Pravana hair color good? We love this brand! They have a huge range of shades available including both natural tones and vivids, as well as semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent options. Checking out some Pravana hair color reviews can help you to narrow down their many options.
Even with the best intentions and research, sometimes you end up with hair dye that just doesn't work for you. So what do you do if you try some new hair color trends and decide they're not for you?
At some point or another, we’ve all made a disastrous hair color decision. There's no need to feel guilty about wanting to go back to your natural hair color, or at least a few shades lighter.
When it comes to removing hair color, there are so many questions that people ask online such as: How to get green out of hair after coloring? How to get purple hair color out? How to get punky color out of hair? How to get pink color out of hair? How to get blue color out of blonde hair? How to get spray color out of hair? (This last one’s easy – it’s temporary so just wash it out with shampoo).
Whatever color you’ve dyed your hair, your options to undo are often the same. So rather than answer each question individually, we’re going to share some general tips and tricks. Read these before you resolve to live the rest of your life with a color that isn't your fave!
Sometimes, another dye can help remove the unwanted color from your hair. Try using a semi-permanent dye that's one shade lighter than the color you want to get rid of—often, it will completely cover any previous colors that are still in your hair.
To get rid of semi-permanent dye, wash the color out with a clarifying shampoo. They’re great for removing deep-seated hair dyes, but they can also be used to remove lighter shades. Simply soak your dyed hair with water and apply clarifying shampoo to it. Massage the shampoo into the hair, then let it sit for five minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Repeat this process daily until you achieve the color you want.
Note that you should only use clarifying shampoo sparingly as it tends to dry out hair, so be sure you follow up with conditioner!
This works especially well with dark dyes. Baking soda is a great option if you're looking to fade or lighten your color. Mix 1 part baking soda with 1 or 2 parts shampoo until it becomes a paste. Rinse your hair thoroughly and apply the mixture to completely soak your scalp and roots. Then, comb it through your hair and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing it out. If you want, add a few drops of lemon juice to the mix as well. Repeat daily for about three weeks or until you get the desired result.
Another option is to use an oil-based treatment by saturating your hair with coconut oil, avocado oil, or olive oil. These oils will penetrate the hair shaft and help loosen the pigment that makes up the color molecules. Then you can use shampoo or dish soap to wash it out of your hair.
Are you wondering how to get Pravana hair color out specifically? The best method is to fade it with a clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoo. You could also spend some time in the sun, go to the beach, or swim in a pool, as sunlight, salt water, and chlorinated water can all help to fade Pravana hair color more quickly. Who knew that fading hair dye could be so fun?
It's important to highlight that you can't just use any shampoo and conditioner to remove dye. As much as we'd all love it to be true, regular store-bought shampoo and conditioner just won't get the job done. Especially if you've dyed your hair a bright color or gone full-on silver, you're going to need something stronger. You should also avoid shampoos that are "color safe” for this task, such as the Color Care range by Keratin Complex, since these are specifically designed not to fade color.
Also, do not use household cleaners. Some people suggest using bleach or ammonia, but trust us: this is a bad idea. Don't try it! Bleach and ammonia can cause damage to your scalp and leave your hair brittle and weak (and still colored). If you have used bleach or ammonia before and you're experiencing hair loss or damage, you can reserve the effect by adding hair growth supplements to your diet and swapping to hair growth products that will pamper and nourish your hair, but it’s always best to avoid damaging your hair in the first place!
Also, if you're experiencing hair damage or hair breakage due to chemicals, heat, environmental change, and the like, you need a non-toxic hair repair system. There are many hair repair products that can strengthen weakened strands, so you don’t need to wait years for new hair to grow in.
There are lots of awesome hair dye ideas for summer 2022, and if you’re anything like us, it’s going to be difficult to choose just one!
Once you have found your perfect style, you won't want the sun or other chemicals to fade the color too soon so be sure to use hair care products that are created specifically to protect treated hair, such as Keratin Complex hair products. They’ll go a long way towards keeping that color vibrant – and the 2022 hair color trends are all about being brilliantly vibrant. ‘The bolder the better’ is the mantra to remember this year!
So which of these new hair color trends would you like to try? Tell us all about it below.]]>While not all of us have the time to go for that perfectly coiffed hair, it’s a goal most of us are aiming for. So how do you make sure your hair looks great throughout the day?
Two ways of achieving this are blow drying and air drying. While blow drying takes time and effort to perfect, air drying can give unpredictable (but quick, and sometimes surprisingly good) results. When you want to be sure that your hair will turn out well, though, you can’t just leave your hair to the unpredictable fate of air drying.
Crossing your fingers and hoping for the best is not the answer: Our helpful guide is! In the following sections, we’ll explore how to get your hair dry like a pro.
Before you can think about how to dry your hair, you want to make sure that you are nurturing it with the right hair care essentials that will allow you to dry it well.
Here’s how to use hair products optimally.
Blow drying your hair is the best way to go if you want to have control over how your hair is styled. But first, take the time to dry your hair. Here are some hair-drying-basics for easy ways to get rid of moisture from your locks after a shower, swim, or downpour without a blow dryer.
For some of us, hair can take as much as 4 to 6 hours to air dry completely. This means that if you have to be someplace with dry hair, it's wise to start your day super early, or dry your hair the previous night, while taking steps to style your hair at least minimally.
For those wondering how to dry your hair without a blow dryer, using a microfiber turban is the first step to achieving this. Thanks to its moisture-wicking properties, microfiber material absorbs more moisture from hair than shaggy towels.
It also doesn’t create friction against the hair like regular towels, which can cause breakage. Ultimately, a microfiber turban is a great pick to speed up air-drying time. Let the microfiber turban sit on your hair for at least five minutes. Gently undo it and then run a wide-tooth comb through the wet strands. Untangling your hair will allow air to move unrestricted through your strands. This can help air-dry your hair faster.
After you’ve combed your hair, flip your hair from left to right and back again every few minutes. Between flips, gently tousle your hair at the roots to allow air to pass through quickly. Keep at it for about 10 minutes.
If you’re running on borrowed time, use a quick-dry serum or lotion to soak up the remaining moisture from your hair. The starch in the formula should help dry your hair fast without a blow dryer.
If you’re going to shower before bedtime, wrap damp (never wet) hair in a satin or silk turban to avoid creating harsh friction against cotton pillowcases. Alternatively, you can buy satin pillowcases if you want to leave your hair open or loosely braided while you sleep. This will ensure you wake up with less frizz and smooth hair.
Blow drying your hair will require time and patience if you want the results to be flawless. Let’s delve into how to blow dry different kinds of hair to achieve a particular look or style:
4C hair is highly textured and requires much love and care. For this hair type, you’ll need to ‘stretch’ your hair to help it sit flat against the scalp instead of sticking out. Working with stretched hair is also advised to help minimize damage caused by a blow dryer.
To stretch 4C hair, create 4-inch-wide sections by twisting or braiding hair at the roots. Sectioned hair should be detangled, moisturized (with a hair mousse or cream), and tied into ponytails at the roots.
Here’s how you should blow dry 4C hair:
Are you wondering how to blow dry relaxed hair without damage? While not as textured as 4C hair, relaxed hair would benefit from the same approach of sectioning hair to create a clean, flawless style.
Wavy hair seems to be the best of both worlds — you have a nice amount of volume, but not an unimaginable amount of kinks and curls. You still have to give your hair love and care, though, if you want your hair to be styled just so.
Here’s how to care for your wavy hair:
To answer your question of how to blow dry hair into waves, twist sections of hair around a flat iron or curling wand and wait for about 15 seconds before releasing your hair. Then, gently run through your hair using a flat brush to open up the curls and reveal gentle waves. These steps should help you with how to blow dry your hair with a round brush.
Are you thinking of how to fix frizzy hair after blow drying it? Simply apply a smidge of leave-in hair oil to the areas where you can see flyaways. Also apply a little bit to the ends of your hair to avoid split ends.
Curly hair comes in all shapes and sizes, and you may want to style your hair differently for different occasions.
Curly hair should be separated with a wide-tooth comb to maintain the integrity of your curls or to evenly distribute hair products such as a conditioner or hair masque. Apply a heat protectant with hydrating properties as well to help minimize frizz.
Use the hair blower with the diffuser to blow dry curly hair:
For how to blow dry curly hair without a diffuser, simply opt for hair curlers or flexible curling rods that require zero heat to achieve curls. Your hair should be slightly damp when you do this. Leave the curlers on overnight for near-perfect results.
To blow-dry natural hair, start by applying heat protectant. Then, use a flat brush to keep sections stiff while using a blowdryer. Once done, apply a little leave-in oil to tame flyaways and restore moisture to your strands and ends. Instead of wondering how to blow dry baby hairs, apply a little hairspray to a small comb and gently nudge the little strands into place.
The best answer for how to blow dry hair for volume is to flip your hair upside down and run a flat brush from the roots to the tips in this position. Apply a volumizing spray along the lengths of damp hair, and start blow drying your hair. Once you’re done, flip it back up and use a little finishing spray to keep its volume intact.
To add volume specifically to the top of your hair, spray volumizing spray, and then follow the steps below:
The above technique also works for blow drying a short hair bob — since you want it to appear voluminous and not flat. For a sleek bob, switch to a paddle brush and blow-dry along the underside of your hair, section by section. Finish off your look with a flat iron styling tool.
After blow-drying your hair, it’s best to use a hair styling gel to maintain a look throughout the day. Curl-defining or smoothing gels can help keep styles intact without curls coming undone. For wavy, straight, and normal hairstyles, use gels to prolong smooth, frizz-free, and soft hair. You can also use a texturizing or finishing spray for glossy, full-bodied results.
Men who sport short hair can easily blow dry hair for a sleek, put-together look. For those of you wondering how to blow dry men's hair back, you’ll need a paddle brush to achieve smooth results.
First, apply a heat protectant or light mousse cream to damp hair and then blow-dry sections of hair with the paddle brush. Hold the brush underneath your hair, placing your thumb over the bristles while blow-drying from the top. Use a styling gel for a light, medium, or strong-hold, depending on the look you’re trying to create.
These tips on how to blow dry your hair like a pro require practice and time to master. It helps to understand what works for your hair type so that you can sustain your hair’s health and vitality.
To get your hair to behave after a blowout, it’s crucial to invest in the right hair care products and follow a solid routine to ensure you’re not overworking your tresses.
Cheers to good hair days!
]]>It’s not simply the color that’s different; gray hair has a completely different feel and consistency than your naturally-colored hair. It can be a little bit thicker or coarser than what you’re used to, and it can be difficult for the strand to grab color.
So what’s the best professional hair color for gray hair? You have a few options, which fall into two main categories: full-coverage color, and gray blending. It’s important to pick the right service for you and your hair. So let’s get into it!
If you absolutely hate grays, a single process is the way to go. This is essentially dying your hair with one color (or a root touch up service). It’s a pretty simple service and takes up a lot less time than, say, a highlight service. It will completely blend your gray hair into your natural color so it just looks like your grays never existed.
This service is likely also the best salon color for gray hair if you’re someone who doesn’t have the time to sit in a chair for 3-5 hours, since they’re relatively quick trips. The main downside is that once your roots grow back, you’ll need to go to the salon again. On average, your hair grows about a ½ inch every month but everyone is different. Some people have to go in for a root touch up as soon as 3-4 weeks after their initial appointment. Normally though the usual time frame would be between 6-8 weeks.
So the benefits of shorter appointment times get somewhat canceled out by the need for more frequent visits. And particularly if you’ve got a lot of color resistant gray hair, the result might not be as perfectly-even as you’re hoping for.
When your hair begins to lose its pigmentation, it’s slow. You’ll begin to notice a gray hair here, and a gray hair there; it doesn’t happen all at once. So at first, getting a single process might be the way to go. But once your grays begin getting more noticeable, I would start considering other options.
Gray blending is huge right now and for good reason. Highlights, lowlights and baby lights are a perfect way to welcome your grays with open arms. When you highlight your hair along with your standard root color, you won’t notice your silver strands as much when they grow in because they’ll blend into the other, lighter tones your hair now has. So it offers the possibility of long lasting hair color for gray hair because you can go much longer between salon visits.
Lowlights are darker than your natural color and can also create a multi-dimensional look that helps to subtly camouflage unwanted color in the hair. If you’re considering highlights to hide gray on dark hair but would really like to keep your overall dark color, ask your stylist about lowlights. Doing a mix of highlights and lowlights together will help to distract from the gray hair growth and give you an all-around more natural look.
Many women also prefer it because they won’t have to worry about that harsh line that comes with the standard root touch up. Plus, this is a great way to do hair color for stubborn gray strands because even if they don’t fully pick up the color, they’ll still visually blend in.
Rinses add a temporary burst of color to your hair that fades away over the course of 4-6 shampoos. Sometimes called a color change shampoo for gray hair, they can be a great way to hide gray hair between colorings because they’re so easy to apply (and so low-risk if you don’t like the resulting color), but they do require very regular upkeep if you’re considering them as a long term option.
Other ways to temporarily hide gray hair between colorings include styling products such as root cover-up pens and palettes, which can also be beneficial if your hair is thinning.
Now if none of the above sound like your thing, there’s another option. Try hair glossing – the best semi permanent hair dye for gray hair! A gloss is a color that coats the strand without penetrating into it, and fades over time. They last a lot longer than temporary hair color rinses for gray hair however, typically 6-8 weeks. This is the best option for someone who doesn’t want to break the bank or be locked into such a consistent hair schedule.
Additionally, a gloss can also help make your gray hair feel smoother and more hydrated. When the strand loses its pigment, it also loses some of its natural oils which are supposed to hydrate and moisturize your hair. So without that hydration, your hair can feel tougher and not as smooth. Applying a gloss to your hair can bring back some softness to the texture and give your hair a really nice shine.
Glosses are not as full coverage as permanent color; it will only cover up to 75% of the grays. It’s perfect for someone who’s a little more nonchalant in regards to covering their grays. But for those who’d like to banish their grays forever, this is probably not going to be your choice.
Piggy-backing off of the highlights suggestion from earlier, you could also ask for silver or cool-toned highlights that will almost mirror your gray strands. If you’re ready to take the leap, accept the gray and fully go with it, then this is the perfect option for you. Rather than hide the gray, it enhances it and creates a more beautiful gray.
For example, you could go with a balayage that illuminates those silver strands and creates an effortless style that is less maintenance as the hair grows out. The key is in the tone. Gray has a very specific tone that is easily spotted especially in natural light, so make sure you go to an experienced hair stylist who will be capable of building the perfect highlight color palette for gray hair.
Once you decide how you want to go about coloring your grays, then you have to make sure you’re maintaining it correctly. As I mentioned before, when your pigment begins to fade, so does the moisture in your hair because it stops producing as many of the natural oils that previously nourished your strands and made them feel soft.
I would recommend going in for a professional hair treatment such as Olaplex or Keratin Complex every now and then to keep the integrity of the hair. Protein treatments and bond treatments such as these will make a significant difference to your hair texture.
You’ll also benefit from making a deep conditioner for color treated hair part of your regular home hair care routine. My favorite hair masque would have to be the Keratin Complex Blondeshell Debrass & Brighten Deep Keratin Treatment which contains purple pigment to keep gray hair looking vibrant and healthy, plus plant oils to nourish and quench dry hair. In fact, the entire Keratin Complex Blondeshell line works fabulously to enhance silver locks. If you choose to dye the grays instead, their Color Care line contains the best shampoo and best conditioner for color treated hair that I’ve found.
Whichever brand you choose though, the best shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair or undyed gray hair will always be one that’s paraben and sulfate free, since these are both known to further damage your hair and cause it to feel dry.
Choosing to embrace the grays? Then it might also be time for a closet and makeup bag refresh. Understanding the best colors to wear with gray hair will ensure you stay looking chic and beautiful rather than tired and washed-out. The same goes for selecting makeup colors for gray hair – gray is a cool-toned color, so if you’ve always had warm-toned hair, it can mean quite the beauty routine transformation! But taking the time to find a new color palette for gray hair is oh-so worth it.
For example, they say black is a timeless classic, but when you have gray hair it can actually be much more flattering to choose a deep navy or warm chocolate brown instead of the harshness of black. That goes for both clothing and eye shadow or eyeliner! As for your lips, the best lipstick color for gray hair is usually a vivid rose or a berry shade such as raspberry pink.
If you’re a glasses-wearer, don’t forget to consider the color of your frames too. The best color frames for gray hair tend to be rich shades such as deep brown, navy, purple or red, whereas yellow-based shades including gold and beige can make your hair look duller.
Whatever your hair preference, going gray is a huge leap for anyone. But it’s becoming more and more accepted for your grays to become the topic of conversation rather than sweeping them under the rug. And whether you like to keep it covered or flaunt it, there are tons of hair, beauty and fashion options out there that will have you and your gray hair looking spectacular.
The best salon color for gray hair will be different for everyone, but the real key to looking good is keeping your hair healthy. Besides that, have fun with your decision! Coloring your hair is fun and allows you to get creative with your options. Gray hair is no exception.
]]>When you're battling dry skin, your priority should be to boost your skin's moisture. But how can you do this? Creating a skincare routine from start to finish is extremely hard, especially if you don't know where to start. Thankfully, the Obagi Nu-Derm FX Starter System Normal to Dry skincare kit is a super-friendly, easy-to-implement solution to improve your skin condition.
Dry skin is something a lot of people suffer from. This condition affects people of all ages, but is very common among those dealing with aging skin. Symptoms can include having tight, flaky, or itchy skin. There are also external factors that can exacerbate this condition such as the winter season or pollution.
Many people confuse having dry skin with dehydrated skin because it has overlapping symptoms. However, dry skin is caused by lack of natural oil. On the other hand, dehydrated skin is not a permanent condition and it only stems from water loss in the trans-epidermal layer. It is possible for someone dealing with oily skin to suffer from dehydrated skin, and the solution is to deal with that separately.
It seems there are hundreds of new skincare lines popping up every month. However, the Obagi brand boasts over 30 years of clinically proven results. The brand has released the Obagi Medical and Obagi Clinical line. The Obagi kit has everything you need to keep your skin healthy, and is easy to implement.
The Obagi Nu-Derm Fx Starter System Normal to Dry is a complete skincare routine that promises to give you a healthier-looking and more even skin tone. This kit is not only beneficial for those who are dealing with dry skin, but also for people noticing early signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, dull complexion, roughness, and discoloration for a healthier complexion. This set consists of hydroquinone free products.
This Obagi set will not only transform the way you look but also make you have a brighter and more radiant complexion, while giving you healthier skin. Here’s what's in the Obagi Nu-Derm Fx Starter System Normal to Dry kit:
This gel will help you remove all the gunk from your face. This includes dirt, makeup, oil, and other grime. It is meant to be used every day to help you have a clear complexion. The Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser skin treatment will leave your skin feeling refreshed and soft throughout.
Having an Obagi gentle cleanser like this product will leave your skin feeling clean and fresh from when you wake up until the time you head to bed. When there are germs and dirt on your skin, it will be easily irritated. On the other hand, when you use a facial wash that isn't gentle, the natural moisture of your skin will be stripped. This Obagi cleanser will make sure your skin is not vulnerable to dryness, while removing dirt.
There are tons of misconceptions about toners, with most people thinking it's just water that is slathered on a cotton ball then rubbed on your skin. However, the Nu-Derm toner is a product that looks like water and it even acts like it, but it's packed with much more ingredients and acids to help it penetrate the skin faster. It also removes dead cells from the surface and gives you a quick blast of hydration.
A lot of people fear toner because they think it stings, and it leaves the skin feeling more dehydrated than usual. Of course, this toner is nothing like that. Hydration is truly the foundation of complete skin care for normal to dry skin. The idea behind a toner is to cleanse your face and hydrate it at the same time.
The Obagi toner is alcohol-free and aids to maintain the right pH level of your skin. It is meant to be used after the foaming gel. It brings back the natural acidic state of your skin to help you absorb other products better.
This Obagi toner isn't only great for people with dry skin, but also for those who are dealing with aging skin. Aside from its astringent properties, it targets major concerns such as oil overproduction, melasma, and other types of skin problems.
The Obagi Nu-Derm Clear Fx meant for dry skin types is a skin-brightening cream that is formulated with nature-identical Arbutin. It also contains antioxidants that will improve your skin by keeping your complexion looking more radiant.
The Obagi Nu Derm Clear FX is very beneficial especially for people dealing with a dull complexion and uneven skin. Perhaps the major benefit of the Obagi Nu Derm FX is that it minimizes dark spots. This is very helpful when you have acne scars and sun spots. The FX Starter System for normal to dry skin is also available.
The Obagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte is an important part of the Obagi skin care line. It is a lightweight lotion whose main job is to exfoliate your skin and remove the old and dull surface. This will reveal new skin that's brighter and more radiant than before.
Exfoliation is a very essential part of the Obagi Nu-Derm Fx Starter System Normal to Dry skin treatment. The Obagi Exfoderm Forte unclogs your pores by sweeping away all the dry and dead skin, along with other dirt and debris that may have remained on your skin after washing and toning it. Exfoliation will also prevent blackheads and whiteheads, and other blemishes. Because of its non-abrasive exfoliation, cell renewal is also stimulated without adding abrasions to the skin.
Exfoliants will help other products like toners and moisturizers penetrate deeper into the skin. When these products can penetrate deeper, they will work more effectively. The last thing you want is for your other skincare products to be hindered by all your dead skin cells from being absorbed.
Want a moisturizer that will do its job for 8 hours? The Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturizer is a part of the Obagi skincare kit you should get. This non-comedogenic moisturizer gives you long-lasting hydration that can last all day or night. It has been clinically shown to improve your skin's moisture content, which is especially helpful if you have dry skin. It's also great to use if you want to keep dry and flaky skin at bay.
One common misconception is that people with oily skin shouldn't bother applying moisturizer. However, this shouldn't be the case. ]]>Protective hair styles are ones that require low manipulation and keep the ends of the hair tucked away. They’re hairstyles that don’t require constant restyling, and can last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of months. The goal is to give the hair a rest from everyday styling, including a break from hot tools that can damage the ends. Putting your hair up in a protective style can even promote healing and hair growth as well. Plus, the ritual of applying protective style products such as oils can be a fabulously relaxing and satisfying way to indulge in a little self-care!
There are a wide variety of protective hair styles you can choose from. Options abound for every type of hair, including natural hair, thin hair, thick hair, dyed hair, damaged hair, and so on. Your hair doesn’t need to look boring and you aren’t limited to just one or two different styles. There are buns, up-dos, braids, cornrows, wigs and so many more options! But whichever one you choose, it’s important to prep your hair the right way in order to get the most from your protective style.
Taking the proper steps to ensure your hair is in top condition is key to keeping the hair healthy while it’s tucked away for a long time. Always do a protective style for natural hair after washing – shampoo, condition and moisturize to maximize the quality of your hair. Even better if you use a deep conditioner to keep hair soft and easy to detangle and style.
For longer-lasting protective hair styles, make sure you also get a trim beforehand to get rid of any dead split ends. The trim will promote hair growth and minimize breakage.
When you’re finally ready for your protective hairstyle, choosing the right one for you can make all the difference. A good option for natural hair is box braids, which is one of the best protective styles for thin natural hair in particular (oh, and one of the best protective styles for short natural hair too). This hairstyle is very versatile and is far from boring. It can last for a long time and is very easy to maintain. You can add colors, ribbons, and colorful threads to this style and change it up a bit for different occasions.
Another of the most popular protective braid styles for relaxed hair or natural hair is Fulani braids. What makes this style so wonderful is that you have so many styling and parting options to choose from. To take it to the next level you can add beads or other accessories to the ends of the braids, which do an amazing job of defining your style.
Yet another cool protective hairstyle is faux locs. You can experiment with different colors, textures and curl patterns to give yourself a twist on the classic makeover. A halo braid is also a gorgeous way to style your hair for a night out – it’s classy and you can style it with cuffs, pins, or jewels for a more glamorous look. And then there are flat twist protective styles for natural hair, which look similar to cornrows but are much easier to do (although they’ll only last a week or so). Oh, and if you’re specifically looking for protective styles for short hair, don’t forget about Bantu knots!
If you have a sensitive scalp and can’t sit through the tension of most protective hair styles, a faux braid ponytail is perfect for you. All you have to do is put your hair in a bun, attach the braid, and voilà you’re good to go! It looks super chic without all the effort, and your hair is still tucked away and protected.
What about protective styles for natural hair at night? One of the simplest yet best things you can do is to wear a silk or satin head wrap or bonnet – it really helps to reduce friction-induced damage!
When it comes to the protective styles for white hair, Asian hair, or any other naturally straight/wavy hair, the best ones would have to be buns, braids, French rolls and twists, or another tucked-away style. In fact, these all work as great protective styles for curly hair too.
A French roll or twist is an elegant style that keeps your ends tucked away and protected. It’s quick and easy and will never go out of style. With a bun, it doesn’t have to be plain or boring. You can keep it looking classy with a low bun or high fashion with a top bun, and add accessories to make a fashion statement. In fact, you can keep the integrity of any of these styles and still get creative with them, for example by swapping basic braids for reverse French braids, mermaid braids, and much more.
Once you have your protective style in place, it’s very important to take care of it properly. To keep your hair’s integrity and keep it hydrated, you will need the right protective style hair products, and you have to know how to protect it at night. Wrapping your hair with a head scarf before you go to bed and/or using a silk pillowcase will keep your hair frizz-free and help to maintain moisture. You will have to add some product each morning to keep your scalp hydrated and the hair moisturized as well.
Now, if you don’t want to go through the process of wearing a protective style but still want to promote hair growth, you can choose a haircut that requires less manipulation (so there’s less opportunity for breakage), ensure you are regularly using anti-humidity products or gels, and consider adding supplements to your diet that specifically target hair health.
Keeping your hair in a detangled state is key however, and you can do this by regularly using a deep conditioner or conditioning mask. This will help avoid damage and knots in your hair and also keep the ends of the hair moisturized. Keeping the tips oiled will also reduce the formation of split ends. You can use heat but use it SPARINGLY. Heat is one of the main causes of hair damage and you don’t want to overdo it because it will cause breakage.
So there you have it! There are many options out there that will keep your hair protected, promote growth, and keep you looking stylish in the New Year. It’s the perfect time to try something new that will also promote healthy hair habits. The hardest part now is choosing the cutest style! Keeping your hair protected and healthy is definitely a New Year’s resolution you’ll actually want to stick to.
]]>We all have routines that we live and swear by, ones which are essential to our daily life. Whether it’s the time we wake up each morning, drinking green juice to kick-start the day, or indulging in a nightly skincare ritual, most of us have something to give us a sense of regularity in our lives. It’s no different when it comes to your hair.
A hair care daily routine is essential in order to give your hair the love and care it needs to perform well. While it may take some time and frustration to figure out exactly what the best daily hair care routine for you should look like, especially when there are many new hair and beauty products coming out all the time, once you have things down pat, looking after your hair should be smooth sailing.
Self-care has found itself in the spotlight as of late, and a daily dose of hair care is a great way to pamper yourself. But between TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube it seems that everyone has a solution for everything, and that doesn’t necessarily make it easier for us! It can feel very overwhelming to receive lots of contradictory advice.
And whether you’re wondering how to take care of wavy hair or how to take care of natural hair daily, it’s important that the routine you follow is tailored to your hair type. What works for someone else won’t necessarily work for you.
However, regardless of your hair type, a holistic hair care routine can be broken down into three main elements: washing, conditioning, and protecting against damage. Start with these and then add in other products, such as hair growth enhancers, as necessary.
How often should you wash your hair? Which brands should you use? What if you have curly hair, or straight hair, or colored hair; what should you do then? First things first, over-washing your hair isn’t good for any type of hair, especially curly or wavy hair. Your hair has an array of nutrients, oils and proteins in it that help protect it from all sorts of damaging factors. If you over-wash your hair, you are stripping it of all of those wonderful items and leaving it exposed to the elements, which will cause your hair to become dry. So try limiting your shampoo days to about 2-3 times a week, or only when really necessary.
When it comes to choosing basic hair care products, make sure they are sulfate and paraben free. Sulfates strip oil from your hair which can make it look dull or lifeless, and parabens are chemical preservatives that have been shown to negatively effect your hair and scalp. Two amazing companies that are sulfate and paraben free are Oribe and R+Co. They have tons of products geared to specific types of hair. Oribe is a little more luxurious in price but both companies are fabulous. And as a bonus their products smell absolutely heavenly!
Now on days where you wake up looking like the Wicked Witch of the West, there is your trusty dry shampoo to the rescue. Dry shampoo absorbs oil in the hair so just spray it on the roots, or the areas where there is grease buildup. This will help your hair last until your next wash, so you can space actual shampoos a little further apart.
Let’s talk conditioner. Your daily hair care routine isn’t complete without a little conditioner to moisturize those strands. Hair can get dry very easily so it’s very important to not skip this step! (And doubly so when it comes to daily hair care for dry hair.) Conditioner also helps to smooth down frizz and flyaway strands.
With conditioner, less is more, so use sparingly. Only apply enough to coat the hair mid-shaft, down to the tips; try to avoid the roots directly. That’s where most of your oil buildup will occur so you do not want to over-do it there. Always leave the conditioner on for a couple minutes, almost like a treatment, and then wash it through. Leave-in conditioner is an alternative if you’re in a rush ─ you apply it post-shower on damp hair from the mid-section to the ends. It can make your hair feel healthier and look shinier.
Just like your skin, your hair needs weekly treatments, as well, to function at its full capacity. A deep conditioning treatment every week can help maintain the quality of your hair by intensely nourishing it. Deep conditioners are packed with essential proteins and nutrients that can give you that salon-worthy look and feel. They’ll make your hair look and feel healthier, and can also make it shinier and bouncier.
If you are prone to excess flaking I would recommend adding a scalp scrub to your weekly regimen. It helps to exfoliate the scalp and allow it to breathe. It assists in getting rid of product buildup from the week; more than just what a shampoo would do. The final step would be to add a little oil to the ends of the hair. This will hydrate the strands and prevent split ends.
Now this is the most important part of your daily hair care routine. No matter your hair type, heat protectant is key. Heat damage can cause your hair to get split ends and the hair strand to break off. Your hair can also become frizzy, dull and dry.
It’s best to avoid applying heat to your hair altogether, or at least infrequently. If you’re like me though and can’t leave the house unless you’ve blow dried and straightened/curled your hair to death, then you should think about incorporating a heat protectant to your morning hair routine. After you shower and while your hair is still damp, you’re going to run this product through your hair with your fingers and then brush it through to make sure you’re covering every strand. A great product is the Balm d’Or by Oribe. It’s a light lotion that doesn’t weigh your hair down and it will shield your hair from any unwanted heat damage.
Also, consider investing in some salon-quality tools. High-quality devices can be a bit pricey, but when it comes to the integrity of your hair, it’s definitely worth it in the long run.
Now what about protecting your hair against other elements? When it comes to your hair, we all experience the wrath of the rain. The humidity certainly does not have my best interests in mind. The second I step outside on a cloudy day, my hair turns into a poof-ball. So I like to add in an anti-frizz product that will help my strands behave and stay smooth.
When it comes to the sun, you definitely want to be careful, especially if you have colored hair. The sun can dull your dye and make it look less vibrant. You’ll want to cover your hair as much as possible when in direct sunlight, so throwing on a cute hat wouldn’t be a bad thing. You also want to protect your scalp too. It can become irritated and even get burned! It’s not like we expect you to put sunscreen in your hair, but try to avoid shampooing the night before a beach day. The oil and skin cell build up on your scalp can actually create a natural shield against UV damage. And you’ll also be rocking some gorgeous beach waves, which is a plus.
Once you’ve got your basic daily hair care routine sorted, you can begin to address other issues such as hair loss or slow-to-grow hair. For these, you can add hair growth supplements to your diet that ensure your body has all the ‘building blocks’ it needs to create strong and healthy hair, as well as pick out products specifically designed to create a healthy scalp environment that will also promote better hair growth. Viviscal’s Thin to Thick shampoo and conditioner is one such option that works fabulously well.
Don’t be afraid to test new things until you find the best daily hair care routine for you. I know that picking the right products for your unique hair needs can be daunting, but once you find a routine that works, you’ll be so happy you did. We all know that when we have a good hair day, nothing can stand in our way - we might even switch our cameras on during our Zoom meetings!
Invest a little money and time in perfecting your holistic hair care routine, and you and your locks will thank you for it. I know mine did!
]]>And there is! Hello Keratin Treatment, goodbye untamable frizz.
A salon or at home keratin treatment may just be the answer to your prayers. Essentially it’s a chemical process that smooths and shines frizzy hair and reduces the appearance of split ends by temporarily bonding the hair back together.
Keratin is an essential protein that provides the nutrients that give our hair that gorgeous shine. Unfortunately, we lose keratin as we age. But luckily for us, we can utilize a keratin treatment at home or at the hairdresser’s to give us back the shinier, smoother, and healthier hair we had when we were young (or before we ruined it with heat styling or chemical products!). These treatments go deep into the follicle and inject porous areas with new keratin, without doing any permanent damage to the integrity of the hair itself.
This can be a game changer for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time in the morning to get ready but wants a long-lasting solution that doesn’t ruin their hair!
A keratin treatment can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to 6 months. Doing a keratin treatment at home is likely to lead to shorter-term results than getting one done at the salon. If you want to continue enjoying the effects of your keratin treatment after 3 months or more, definitely go to a professional since the products they use will contain more keratin and/or a better delivery system.
This treatment works on almost all hair types. It’s for anyone who has unmanageable frizz, coarse hair, thick curls, or who just wants to make their morning routine a little bit easier. The treatment can straighten the hair completely, or just loosen the curl shape.
You’ll also be happy to know that keratin treatment is safe to use on colored hair! Unlike chemical relaxers, keratin treatment does no harm to dyed hair. In fact, it’s recommended to refresh your color right before your treatment since it helps to seal that new color in.
Keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts work in a similar way, but while the former uses keratin which is a large protein, the latter uses amino acids which are smaller. The result is less short-term aftercare from a Brazilian blowout, but also effects that don’t last as long.
However, you can think of a Brazilian blowout sort of like a soft keratin treatment to keep curly hair smooth and shiny without getting rid of your coils or ringlets, since its reduced intensiveness means it has less of a straightening effect on the hair.
A keratin treatment is unlike a chemical relaxer which permanently straightens your hair and alters the chemical composition of it. Japanese treatments are the same; they permanently straighten the hair and can be much more damaging. A keratin treatment is a safer, non-permanent option.
When it comes to keratin hair treatment side effects however, there is one concern you want to be aware of, which is that some keratin treatments contain a small amount of formaldehyde which can be toxic if inhaled while the treatment is being applied. The good news is that nowadays, the best keratin treatment brands are formaldehyde-free, typically using the much safer compound glyoxylic acid in its place. Always check the label or ask your hair technician about the ingredients so that you can feel secure about the products going into your hair.
With keratin treatments for hair now in high demand, most salons offer this service. Each technician will have his or her own technique which may alter the treatment time, but for the most part the service lasts anywhere from 2-4 hours and is dependent on the amount and length of hair you have.
First the hair care specialist will wash your hair, then apply the treatment and leave it in for about 30 minutes to allow the formula to saturate the strands. Next, your hair will be treated to a blow dry, after which it will be flat ironed to seal it in (the keratin treatment is heat activated so this last step is very important.) And voilà! You now have gorgeous, shiny, frizz-free hair for up to 6 months!
With the caveat that a professional keratin treatment will always deliver better and longer-lasting results, there are some really great products to do a DIY keratin treatment at home. The results will probably only last about a couple of weeks but if you’re more concerned about not breaking the bank and a little less with the time frame of the results, then go for it!
Don’t purchase professional grade products to use at home, though. Those require someone who knows what they’re doing to apply and monitor the treatment to make sure it’s not going to damage your hair – since it is still a chemically-based process, it can be dangerous to perform yourself if you are not properly educated in the treatment. Stick to purpose-designed at home keratin treatment options which will be safer.
One of the very best keratin treatment at home involves using the Keratin Complex Personalized Blowout by Keratin Complex, a brand whose signature product was voted Favorite Smoothing Treatment by Behind the Chair Stylist Choice Award for nine years running. You can also try the Keratin Complex Express Blowout, which is a bit milder.
At home keratin treatment products vary a lot in price, but it’s probably worth avoiding the cheapest ones since they’ll contain very little keratin. A professional Keratin Complex treatment meanwhile can be a little bit pricey, but for the outcome, it’s very much worth it. Depending on how much hair you have, a salon keratin treatment cost ranges from about $250 all the way up to $500 or $600. For this money, you’re getting frizz-free, smooth, shiny hair that’s low maintenance for as much as half a year. It’ll be money well spent if you’re tired of fighting with the flat iron before work each morning – no more worrying about waking up early to tame your hair!
At the very least, make sure you’re using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner at home to maintain your results. Don’t over wash your hair, either. Every time you shower, just rinse your hair with water and apply conditioner to the ends, and only shampoo your hair 2-3 times a week or as necessary.
To really help make the results last as long as possible, there are some great products available to use after you receive the treatment. The entire Keratin Complex brand is centered around professional-quality keratin treatments plus at-home maintenance products that will help keep your hair absolutely gorgeous until your next salon visit. For example, they have a variety of different shampoos, conditioners, masks, serums, and creams all formulated especially for keratin-treated hair.
Plus, they have products that cater to your unique hair needs whether it’s curly hair, colored hair, dry hair, an oily scalp or so on, so you can build a Keratin Complex at-home care kit that’s really tailored to you. Their prices are comparatively affordable and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
To recap, a keratin treatment is a chemically-based service that controls frizz, creates shine and helps bond split ends. It doesn’t permanently damage hair and is color safe. Once you get the treatment, your hair turns from high maintenance to low maintenance, saving you loads of time when getting ready for the day.
Even the best keratin treatment at home only delivers results that last up to 6 weeks (with cheaper products possibly only smoothing your hair for a third of that time) while salon treatments cost more but leave your hair soft and shiny for up to 6 months. So it all comes down to what you’re willing to spend upfront. Just keep in mind that if you’re regularly using an at-home keratin treatment, you may well end up spending the same amount overall per 6-month period while incurring a lot more hassle than one single trip to the salon!
Hair plays a huge part in our identity. Our hair is one of the first things people notice and there are so many different ways to express ourselves through our hair. When you have a good hair day you feel like you can conquer anything. But as we age, it’s more likely that we will start to experience hair thinning at the temples or on top of our heads, and styling it won’t be as easy as it was in our 20s. Hair plays a big part in our confidence and when you begin to lose your hair, you can feel like you’re losing a part of yourself. But don’t worry, we have all the tips and tricks to ensure that you feel better than ever and can combat this very common concern.
About one third of women experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Two thirds of post-menopausal women suffer from hair-thinning or bald spots. For men it’s even more common. By the age of 21, 25% of men will experience hair loss. By age 35 approximately 66%, and by age 50, 85% of men experience this. Androgenic Alopecia (AGA) is the most common hair loss disease in the world and is mostly caused by stress. Male pattern baldness (MPB) usually manifests as a recession of the frontal hairline. Female pattern loss (FPHL) presents with diffuse hair loss over the middle scalp, the crown, and can show up as balding spots. Sometimes, you’ll get hair thinning on one side only.
What causes it? Androgens, a hormone found in both men and women, are important in regulating hair growth. Increased levels of androgens in hair follicles can lead to a shorter cycle of hair growth and shorter, thinner strands of hair. There’s also a delay in the growth of new hair to replace strands that are shed.
It’s no surprise that we do not feel great when we start to experience this, but it’s important to understand that there are many ways to address this concern. The way you style your hair is such a simple and inexpensive way to immediately have your hair appear fuller and thicker. Something as simple as parting your hair to the side can give your hair volume and fullness around the face. Try to avoid a center part because it can make your hair appear flatter. I know the whole trend now is a middle part, but don’t let Gen Z determine how you live your life. Rock that side part!
A trip to the salon can do wonders in building your confidence when it comes to your thinning hair. Your hair technician has tons of knowledge when it comes to this and they can recommend the perfect cut and look to update your do. When you have hair loss, it’s a common misconception that not cutting it and letting it grow out will make it look thicker. This is so untrue though! Cutting your hair creates more volume. Long hair tends to weigh it down, making the hair look stringy and flat. Fine hair tends to look best when cut at the collarbone or shorter, and blunt cuts can give the appearance of thicker hair. Try opting for a shorter cut with micro layers. For Black hair, ask your stylist about sisterlock styles for thin hair which can give it a fuller appearance and even cover bald spots if done well. As our hair adapts, we have to as well. So even if you’re nervous to try a new cut or style, trust in the process and believe that your hair tech has your best intentions in mind.
One big no-no in styling thin hair is cutting your bangs. It’s almost never a good decision to go for bangs but in this case it’s like life and death. Women lose hair at the crown of their head so you’re literally taking hair away from where you need it most. Instead, add texture around the face. When explaining this to the hair tech, make sure you express the word texture and not layers. It will make hair look longer and fuller. Always add a darker color to the root which will create the illusion of depth and can camouflage thinner hair. You can experiment with root sprays or shampoos before committing to permanent color.
When it comes to styling thinning hair, you want to style it when it’s slightly dirty. So about your second or third day after washing is perfect. It keeps it fuller and can hold on to the style easier. If your hair tends to look a little greasy by then, Boldify Dry Texturizing Spray is a fabulous dry shampoo for thin hair.
So, what about the actual style? For women, one of my favorite choices for thinning hair are tape in extensions. They give you length, volume, texture, and the most important of all, confidence! Tape in extensions are the least damaging because they are not chemically glued to the hair. They won’t pull out your existing hair and they are very easy to install and maintain. When going in for a consultation, your stylist will color match you and then order the perfect length and color for you. You also have the option of doing clip-in extensions if you just want those long locks for specific occasions. They give you more freedom of choosing when and where you can wear them. For those who like to rock a pony, there’s a thin hair ponytail extension clip that will give you Ariana Grande vibes in a second. A great special occasion or wedding hair style for thin hair is a twisted down style. Low buns are a great style too. You can easily make it fancy with beautiful clips or accented bobby pins, or even use flowers to fill in the style.
For men, there are many ways to style or cover your thinning hair. You could opt for a close shave and remove everything, starting fresh. It’s great for guys who are just fed up with their styling routine and are ready to give that up. Many men reported feeling a confidence boost after busting out the razor and shaving cream. If you don’t want to take off everything, you could go for the close shave and then accentuate your facial hair. It can give men a very rugged and attractive look. The messy push is a great styling choice if your hairline has begun receding. Wherever you’re thinning, style your hair in the direction of that. It can shroud those areas and make it appear thicker.
Now let’s talk about the best women’s and best men's hair styling products for thin hair that can help you out. It’s crucial to carefully consider your hair care routine for thin damaged hair, both to enhance what you’ve still got and to ensure you’re avoiding things that could be exacerbating the hair loss, such as tight ponytails. For your at-home regimen, Boldify Hair Boost Shampoo is an excellent shampoo for hair growth, while the best hair styling creams for thin hair include the Surface Awaken Thickening Cream and Fatboy Styling Cream. You might also want to consider getting a keratin treatment for thin hair at your local salon.
If just switching up your products or styling your hair differently isn’t cutting it, you have to invest in key products that will actively stimulate hair growth. One of the best hair growth vitamin supplements to turn to are Nutrafol. This product is a major game-changer when it comes to thinning hair for both men and women. Nutrafol has no side effects, only side benefits. It’s all natural with standardized, medical-grade, bio-optimized botanical ingredients that targets root causes of poor hair health. They’re also gluten, shellfish and soy free with no artificial additives. What Nutrafol does is create a healthy environment for your hair that allows the vitamins to penetrate and do their job. They are backed by science and clinically proven to work. Now it’s not a magic pill, you have to take it every single day. But when taken properly it can lower stress levels, which we know is linked to hair shedding.
Another fantastic option is the Viviscal hair growth program, which combines supplements that treat thinning hair from within with the best shampoo and conditioner for hair growth, to optimize the scalp environment from the outside too. Viviscal for hair loss is a proven treatment program that actually thickens hair strands as well as increasing the number of them on your head.
Thinning hair doesn’t mean that your life is over. It just means you have to adapt and learn new ways of managing it. Almost everyone is going through the same thing so you don’t have to feel like you’re alone in this. At first it can be a little shocking and even upsetting, but it doesn’t dim your beauty at all. You can find different ways to style, color, and cut your hair to make it just as unique as you are. And when it comes to the best styling products for thinning hair, male and female brands alike offer a wealth of options that can transform your look.
Your hair is so much a part of you. And when you restyle or regrow your hair again, you can regrow your confidence.
]]>As we age, the concept of time suddenly takes on new meanings. We look at life through wiser eyes and our adventures are displayed on our faces like paintings in the Louvre. We hold dear the people who have loved us and cherish the wonderful experiences we have been given. As time goes on, our bodies become a capsule of those experiences. The memories that are held in our mind slowly begin to show themselves to the outside world.
Our skin is just a window, to us and to others, of what goes on with our body internally. As we age, our skin begins to change and it craves a different type of care. Skin cell reproduction slows down, we lose collagen, which is what keeps our skin plump. Gravity takes over, and causes our skin to sag and wrinkle. It’s important to begin taking care of our skin at an early age. This won’t stop the aging process altogether, but it will ensure that we embrace it well and do it gracefully.
Let’s begin by naming enemy number one; the sun! If the sun was a person, he’d be on dateline and have a documentary by now. UV light from the sun is on skincare’s most wanted list and I totally understand that you are all so tired of hearing that. The amount of times I have rolled my eyes at anyone who told me to wear SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is infinite. But here’s why you need to actually care.
About 90% of ALL skin damage is due to the sun. If I was told that there was a 90% chance of rain, I’m definitely bringing an umbrella. So why wouldn’t you wear an SPF or cover up when you’re in the sun if there’s a 90% chance you’ll damage your skin? Even if you are in the sun for 5 minutes a day, multiply that by 30 days a month, and 12 months a year. I’m no mathematician but that seems like a lot of time in the sun. Adding SPF to your skincare or makeup routine can ensure you’re protecting your skin without having to add an extra step to your day. There are powders and foundations with SPF in it, as well as, moisturizers that will give you that layer of protection.
UV light from the sun and tanning beds can cause the skin to lose its elasticity, which in turn causes the skin to wrinkle and sag. The rays penetrate the skin barrier and break down collagen. As I mentioned before, collagen is what keeps our skin plump and smooth. The thing about collagen is that we lose it as we age. It’s the reason our skin doesn’t hold its shape as easily as it does when we’re young. I know, so rude. But the good news is that the skincare industry is abundant in products that assist in stimulating collagen production in your skin. The key is to make sure the product has an effective delivery technology of the ingredients so it can penetrate the skin’s barrier and deliver it directly into your pores.
The sun can also cause hyperpigmentation, sun spots or “liver spots”, which are caused by overactive pigment cells and produce more rapidly when the area of skin is exposed to UV light. These spots can become deadly by turning cancerous, so it is very important that we pay attention to the changes in our skin. Please see a doctor or dermatologist immediately if you notice the spot taking an abnormal shape or color, or if it begins to bleed. To lighten and brighten these areas, you’ll need a miracle worker. Just kidding. Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant that helps to even and brighten your tone, protects against environmental aggressors & free radicals. Like a superhero, it packs a powerful punch. Not only does it lighten and brighten your skin, but it also protects against UV damage. So adding this into your morning routine via serum or cream can do a lot for your aging skin.
Speaking of routines, let’s talk about them. Just like we would never wear that crop top we wore in our 20s, we would never use the same skincare we used back then either. So in addition to our closet, we’re going to revamp our skincare routine. We want to stick to products that are there for a purpose, not just the random products you pick up from Marshall’s or Walmart. It’s always great to ask your esthetician for recommendations since they know your skin best. Here are some ideas to start you off so that you can have a productive conversation.
Cleanser AM/PM: Use a gentle, fragrance free cleanser to remove any grease and dirt from the day. As we age, our skin doesn’t retain as much moisture and gets dry & sensitive. Using a fragrance free cleanser is going to protect the lipid barrier and keep it hydrated.
Recommendation: Biologique Recherche Lait U cleansing milk
Serum AM: Use a Vitamin C serum. Like I mentioned earlier, Vitamin C is an antioxidant and will protect your skin against the sun and environmental aggressors. It will also even out your tone and brighten sun spots.
Recommendation: Citrix Vitamin C Pro-Collagen Brightening Serum
Serum PM: Use a hyaluronic acid serum for an extra boost of hydration. Hyaluronic acid is something we naturally have in our body and we lose it as we age. It holds up to 1000x its weight in water which helps with moisturizing and plumping the skin.
Eye Cream AM/PM: Use an anti-aging eye cream that brightens and tightens.
Recommendation: Image Ageless Total Eye Lift Crème
Cream AM/PM: Use a hydrating cream that’s denser than you’re used to. Using one that also contains collagen will keep the skin firm and prevent/treat wrinkles.
Recommendation: Biologique Recherche Crème ADN Elastine Marine Collagene Marin
Sunscreen AM: Do NOT skip your sunscreen. Use one with at least 30 spf to decrease the risk of skin cancer.
Recommendation: iSClinical Extreme Protect SPF 30
Treatment PM: Using a retinol every other night will assist in cell turnover rate. This helps treat wrinkles, acne scarring, pigmentation, and texture. An all-in-one gold mine.
Recommendation: Revision Retinol Complete
Weekly: It’s important to exfoliate once a week to help with removing any dry, dead skin to help with the appearance of pores, wrinkles & fine lines, and discoloration.
Recommendation: Neova Serious Reveal Exfoliator (20% Glycolic)
Protecting your skin can be so much more than just applying topical products. Our skin is the largest organ of our body and it’s vital in protecting against pathogens and environmental damage. It’s important that as we get older we are assisting it in the fight! Our skin is just an outside reflection of what is happening internally, so if we are living on big mac’s and whoppers our skin will most definitely not perform at premium capacity. It’s important to pay attention to what we’re putting into our body and be conscious of what it’s doing for us. Foods rich in antioxidants and complex carbs (whole grains & pastas) can protect our skin and help keep a healthy appearance.
Try to avoid dairy because it’s been linked to breakouts. Also avoid red wine to avoid dilated blood vessels which can become permanently damaged. Vitamin C and a lower intake of fats and carbs will give your skin a glow and keep it looking vibrant. It’s not just about what we put into our body, but what we do with it too.
Exercising can improve circulation which nourishes the skin & can stimulate collagen production. This will give you a beautiful rosy glow. Just like that bottle of wine does but healthier. Just make sure to wash your face afterward, so as to not clog your pores.
The big question is at what age should you start thinking about your aging skin, and when is too late? I get these questions a lot and you are NOT going to like the answer. But the fact of the matter is that we begin the aging process at 20. Yes, you began aging before you could even legally buy alcohol at a bar. The audacity. So my answer to that question is, start adding in anti-aging products in your 20s for preventative care. Sub your rose water toner for a Vitamin C Serum, or your hydrating eye cream for a brightening one. There are little changes you can make to your routine that will assist your future self and make sure she never has to worry about the decisions you made when you were bar hopping until 5am on a random Tuesday. To answer the other question, it is never too late to start taking care of aging skin. But it is much harder to reverse the effects the later you start. When the damage is superficial, and mostly sitting on the top layers of skin, it is much easier to address and fix. When wrinkles begin to run deep into the dermis and the sun spots have taken root, you’re looking at a much longer journey that could involve more intense procedures like laser light therapy, IPL or injections. And trust me, those are not very fun.
Do use sunscreen; don’t hangout directly in sunlight.
Do eat foods rich with antioxidants; don’t do dairy and red wine.
Do moisturize and stay hydrated; don’t use drying skincare products.
Be conscious of what you’re putting in and on your body, even if it’s just for your skin. Life takes twists and turns that we aren’t in control of, so if we can be in control of at least one thing, let’s make it your skin.
Fall is fast approaching and I don’t know about you guys, but I am living for it. The days of fun in the sun, rooftop parties, and sipping on iced beverages is a thing of the past and I’m not sorry about it. I’m ready to welcome with open arms those cold winter nights where I can be in bed by 7pm with a glass of wine and no one can judge me for it. Yes baby, summer is shedding her sun-damaged skin and so am I. You read that right. I mean literally shedding my oily, congested, sun-soaked summer skin: I can make way for my new healthy skin that’s been waiting not-so-patiently to introduce herself. The way we do that is by exfoliating, a process that removes the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin using a chemical, granular substance, or exfoliation tool.
The average human body sheds about 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells each minute. That’s 50 million skin cells a day guys. Ew. Since our skin is an organ that’s regularly exposed, it’s in a constant state of regeneration. As we get older that process begins to speed up. Have you ever wondered why your esthetician asks you to come in every 3-4 weeks? It’s because that’s how long it takes for your skin to shed the dead layer and allow for new healthy skin to surface. The average lifespan of a cell is about 4 weeks, and that includes the growing, moving and shedding of skin cells. I don’t know about you guys, but this makes me want to buy a sugar scrub real bad.
Sometimes these dead skin cells don’t shed completely, resulting in dry, flaky patches and clogged pores. Exfoliating can prevent that and improve your skin appearance in many different ways. It can leave your skin looking brighter, help prevent clogged pores (which results in fewer breakouts) and can even increase collagen production. Collagen is what keeps our skin bouncy, smooth and glowing while improving elasticity. This prevents our skin from sagging. It is so important to give your skin love and take care of it properly. Exfoliating is one of the easiest and most important steps in your skincare routine and I promise you, your skin will thank you for it. Exfoliating can even improve the way your skin absorbs products, making them more effective in your routine.
It’s important to choose the right exfoliating tool for you. There are so many options out there and one person’s skin is very different from the other. There’s physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Any method or product that requires you to manually scrub or rub is known as physical exfoliation, while chemical exfoliation uses different chemicals. These can include hydroxyl acids and retinols, in addition to enzymes to renew your skin. There are different tools you can use to exfoliate with, and you might already have these items in your home. You know that loofah you use that you could probably replace more often? Yeah, that’s exfoliating your skin. And now that you know you can shed up to 50 million skin cells a day, I think it’s time for a new one.
There are so many different types of exfoliators it’s hard to know which one is right for you. There are exfoliating masks, exfoliating cleansers, exfoliating pads, exfoliating sponges. It’s important to understand your skin type and get what works for you. If you tend to lean more towards oily congested skin, you can probably handle a more aggressive exfoliator like a retinoid or physical exfoliant up to 3x a week. Retinoids are derived from vitamin A and work by protecting your skin against free radicals and promoting collagen production. If your skin is more on the sensitive side, I would recommend using a gentle, BHA exfoliator 1-2x a week. BHA’s, Beta-hydroxy-acids, are an oil-soluble acid that are typically less irritating than other chemicals or physical exfoliants.
If you tend to have dry skin, you could do well with an AHA, alpha-hydroxy-acid. AHA’s help to eat away at the dead skin revealing brighter, more evenly pigmented skin underneath and this can allow your moisturizers to penetrate deeper into the skin making your skin more hydrated. With combination skin, it’s really about finding the right balance. You could use a more aggressive exfoliant one day and then balance it out with a weaker one the next. Finally with normal skin, you can most likely play around with most products without experiencing any adverse reactions. It’s really up to personal preference. Make sure that you are not over-exfoliating as this could lead to irritation and can make your skin feel over-stimulated and raw. Just pay attention to how your skin feels and reacts and listen to it.
When you exfoliate different body parts, you should use different types of exfoliators. Please do not use the exfoliator you use for your body on your face. The vanilla almond coffee scrub you got at bath & body works might not be the best fit for your face. It is, however, perfect for prepping your body for shaving. No one likes a dry and bumpy shave and when you exfoliate the dead skin off beforehand, you’re able to get closer to the skin and get a cleaner result. Nothing beats the smooth, satiny feeling of a fresh shave and then getting under the covers. Ladies, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s better than hitting all the green lights when you’re late to work.
When it comes to exfoliating on thinner areas like the skin on your lips, there are specific products for that so as to not cause tearing of the skin. One place you might not have thought to exfoliate is your scalp. Product buildup and oil/congestion is very common on your scalp and it’s key to remove that. It can help stimulate hair growth and allow you to have healthier, shinier, smoother hair.
When it comes down to it and you’re considering getting an exfoliator for the first time or you just like to switch things up, make sure you do your research on the brand and product before purchasing. Every body’s skin is different, with completely different needs. It’s not like a one-size-fits-all type of thing, although that would make our lives so much easier. If you still feel lost and Google isn’t doing it for you, you can always run down to your trusted spa and ask your esthetician for a recommendation. They can usually perform a skin analysis and make sure you leave with the perfect exfoliant for your unique self.
With this change of seasons comes the need to adjust and switch up a lot of things; boots instead of sandals, sweaters instead of tank-tops, scarves instead of sunglasses. Why not switch up your skincare too? Your dead skin is a lot easier to shed than those 10 lbs of quarantine weight you didn’t ask for. Spoil yourself this season by getting the best skin of your life with a brand new exfoliator. It might make your holiday shine just as bright as your skin will.
Relaxing music, tranquil candles and aromatic scents are some of the things that come to mind when we imagine spending a day at the spa. Unfortunately, not all of us have the time or the means to be queen for a day somewhere else. However, we all deserve to feel pampered. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to gather spa products and create our very own spa day.
Creating your own spa experience at home can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. Whether your idea of relaxation is a quick 10-minute face mask for that boost of hydration, or an indulgent bubble bath with a calming salt soak, Editor’s Pick has the best home spa products you need to create your personal spa kit.
One of the first essentials you want in your spa kit is fragrance. Choose a fragrance to define your home spa. You want to choose a scent which evokes a feeling of relaxation that you save exclusively for your spa time. Lavender, sandalwood, eucalyptus and other essential oils are all common aromas used in professional day spas, and for a good reason. Essential oils have been used for centuries to reduce stress and invoke a feeling of peace.
If you’re unsure of where to start, the Nest Fragrances Moroccan Amber Luxury Candle captures the aroma of a professional day spa and makes the perfect addition to your bath spa set. Moroccan amber, sweet patchouli, heliotrope, bergamot and eucalyptus define this candle’s pleasantly calming scent that will create a luxuriously exotic atmosphere as soon as you light it.
For those who want to reap the stress-reducing benefits of an essential oil for deep relaxation, the Basq NYC Lavender Soy Candle features the calming scent of lavender in a soy-based wax that will refresh your bath routine to promote sleep and tranquility in no time.
Nothing says "my spa" like a personalized bath. The bubble baths we remember from our childhood have nothing on the endless options of home spa products offered today. Salt soaks, bath bombs and milk baths are just a few of the new generation of spa essentials.
Known for their abilities to rejuvenate and detoxify, soaks and salts make for wonderful additions to your bath routine that provide your skin with beneficial vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The Seaweed Bath Co. Fresh Whole Seaweed Detox Bath is a bath soak formulated with organic bladderwrack seaweed, a plant with over 65 vitamins and minerals and aids in the skin’s natural detoxification process to flush environmental toxins from the body.
For those who like to keep it simple (hey, there’s nothing wrong with that!) and aren’t ready to dip their toes into anything too fancy, there’s still plenty of bath products for your home spa kit. The L'Occitane Lavender Foaming Bath contains lavender essential oil and will leave your body relaxed and your skin feeling supple. A small amount under running water is all it takes to produce a rich, foaming bubble bath for the kid in all of us.
Besides fragrant candles and bubbles, a girl's spa day needs a face mask. From soothing dry, irritated skin to fighting skin discoloration and brightening the complexion, there’s a face mask for every skin concern and type and should be a part of your home spa kit. Face masks aren’t only relaxing — they’re a great way to get a quick boost of nutrients and benefits into your skin!
If you aren’t sure exactly what your skin needs, you can’t go wrong with a nourishing moisture mask like the Clarins SOS Mask Comfort. This soothing mask is enriched with wild mango butter and oil to rejuvenate skin that’s rough, dull and flaky for a softer complexion in as little as 10 minutes. It’s also formulated with Clarins’ patented plant-based Anti-Pollution Complex that protects skin from indoor and outdoor pollutants.
A charcoal mask is a great way to detoxify impurities like acne and blackheads from the face for a clearer complexion. The Glo Charcoal Detox Mask is a two-in-one exfoliating treatment face mask that combines charcoal powder, kaolin clay and bentonite clay. These powerful ingredients help draw out excess oil and buildup for a refreshed complexion. To top it off, it has jojoba beads that softly exfoliate the skin and leave it smooth, soft and conditioned.
The best home spa products aren’t just for your face and body—they’re for the hair, too! Even if you regularly take care of your locks, you should add a hair mask to your home spa kit. A deep conditioning hair mask is formulated with ingredients that not only leave your hair soft but strengthen your hair as well. Hair masks can smooth frizziness and reduce flyaways, repair damage and reduce breakage, and add a dose of vitamins and nutrients to keep your hair healthy and shiny.
The Moroccan Oil Weightless Hydrating Mask is a rich and creamy, yet lightweight, deep conditioning treatment formulated with argan oil and other nourishing vitamins to revive fine, dry hair. Moroccan Oil has made its name in the haircare industry for its formulas that deeply hydrate and condition while dramatically improving texture, elasticity, manageability in even the most unruly of locks.
For the strands that could use something stronger, the Redken Extreme Mega Mask provides a deep, intense conditioning that lasts up to three washes. Part of Redken’s own SMART Haircare family, this mask is formulated with their RCT Protein Complex, a patented technology that combines three proteins that attract to the areas where your hair needs it the most. From your roots to your ends, the Redken Extreme Mega Mask earns its name as it fortifies hair to be 15 times stronger after just one use.
After our face and neck, our hands show our age more than any other area of the body, which means we should be giving our hands the same attention that we give our complexion. Most of us apply hand lotion throughout the day—which certainly goes a long way to warding off dry skin and wrinkles—but just like with our face and our hair, we should give our hands a special treat every now and then. So, why not add a hand treatment to our bath spa set?
The Patchology Perfect Ten Heated Hand Mask is a self-warming mask for the hands and cuticles that’s sure to give your hands some much-needed TLC. It’s infused with coconut oil, fatty acid-rich butters, vitamin E and fruit extracts for a skin-softening boost of nutrients. This self-heating mask makes use of the same insulation technology as space blankets, with a reflective material that creates a heat barrier to lock in the body’s natural heat and allow the ingredients to penetrate and rejuvenate dry, tired hands.
No best home spa products list would be complete without our very own pedicure at home service. Most of us shy away from the idea of doing our own pedicures and prefer to leave it to the professionals, but with a few choice products in your spa kit, you can do just as good of a job—if not better!
Our feet are responsible for carrying us throughout the day, so they deserve their own special bath. The Gehwol Soft Feet Nourishing Bath is formulated with almond, avocado and castor oils as well as vitamin E to soothe the feet and replenish moisture to dry, cracked heels. Finish your soak with a foot massage to lock in moisture and keep the feet smooth with a dab of Gehwol Soft Feet Cream infused with milk and honey extract.
If you’ve got especially stubborn heels and calluses, the Patchology PoshPeel Pedi Cure will polish your feet up in no time. This pedicure peel is formulated with a powerful combination of AHAs and BHAs blended from botanical extracts to deeply exfoliate and soften the surface of the feet by speeding up cell turnover and sloughing off the dead, rough outer layer of the skin.
Finding a skincare routine that works for you is no small feat. Those of us who have dry skin can find it even more frustrating to find a skincare routine that doesn’t make the dry skin on the face worse. Luckily, there are some tips and tricks that can help you care for your dry skin.
With a little education about what causes dry skin in the first place, you’ll be able to choose what is best for dry skin on the face and body so you can replenish moisture and leave the skin feeling hydrated and healthy in no time.
Dry skin is a skin type that is classified by flakiness, a feeling of tightness and low oil production. In a lot of cases, dry skin types will also have redness and irritation and may even feel itchy. Dry skin often overlaps with sensitive skin, as many people who have sensitive skin are in a constant state of inflammation, which inhibits the skin’s natural outer protective barrier from regulating oil production and keeping the skin hydrated as it normally does.
Dry skin can also be indicative of an underlying issue such as an allergy or hormone imbalance. More often than not, it’s a result of the skin’s natural barrier being worn down from using too many harsh ingredients and not enough moisturizer with sufficient hydration. The good news is that in most cases dry skin can be managed with the right products for dry skin on the face.
Since dry skin has trouble keeping moisture in, the key to moisturizing your dry skin is to find a face lotion for dry skin that can prevent water loss and lock in hydration levels within the skin.
Our skin’s hydration levels can fluctuate and be depleted based on whether our skin barrier is functioning normally. When the skin’s barrier is functioning as it should, it can naturally regulate oil production and restore skin to its equilibrium where its moisture and hydration levels are normal.
When treating dry skin it’s important to specifically look for a face moisturizer for dry skin as these types of face lotions will be formulated with ingredients to help restore the skin barrier to function as it normally should. Once the skin barrier returns to normal, the skin can regulate oil production for a healthy complexion that has plenty of moisture.
The best face lotion for dry skin on the face is ultimately going to be the moisturizer that your own unique skin can tolerate without causing further dryness and one that you can commit to using regularly. The key to restoring moisture and hydration levels in the skin is to stick to a skin care routine.
One of the first types of face lotions that dry skin sufferers turn to is face creams such as calming nourishing night cream, repair creams and oil-based creams. These types of moisturizers for dry skin are all characterized by having a thicker, creamier formula and aren’t as lightweight as face lotions for combination skin and oily skin.
Face creams and moisturizing creams are often formulated with oils such as jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil and coconut oil. The addition of oils in moisturizer functions not only to have a soothing, emollient (or softening) effect on the skin but helps to lock in hydration and everything underneath.
For most of us with dry skin, a face cream or moisturizer like the Obagi Hydrate Luxe for dry skin is more than enough. But what about those of us who have dry skin in addition to other skin concerns we’re trying to treat? You can go the extra mile in restoring hydration levels in dry skin and bringing out a healthy complexion by choosing a type of moisturizer for dry skin that also targets your other skin concerns.
Those with mature and aging skin tend to be dry. In fact, this type of combination skin is very common and can be particularly concerning since fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging are only emphasized the dryer the skin is.
Fortunately, most moisturizers for dry skin are some of the best moisturizers for aging skin and will function well as face lotions for anti aging, since healing dry skin and smoothing out wrinkles are both accomplished by replenishing moisture within the skin.
The Obagi SuzanObagiMD Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex is one of the best moisturizers for dry aging skin and has retinol, a powerful anti aging ingredient. Retinol can be irritating and cause dryness of the skin, however, when formulated specifically as an anti-aging cream, its irritation is offset by soothing, moisture rich ingredients to make it an ideal formula for treating dry aging skin.
Dry skin and acne is a tough combination to beat, as excess oil can cause buildup and contribute to breakouts. Yet, not having enough oil is what causes dry skin. This sounds like an impossible vicious cycle to break, but luckily, new moisturizers for dry skin have come out that can deeply hydrate without exacerbating acne.
Light face lotions for dry skin and gel creams such as the Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturizer for dry skin are a lightweight gel formula that combines the hydrating emollient powers of a cream with the light, non-greasy feel of a water gel. Together, gel creams are one of the best moisturizers for dry skin that also suffers from acne as they can lock hydration in and prevent water loss without the use of oil.
Many gel creams and water gel moisturizers for dry skin contain the ingredient hyaluronic acid, a humectant that binds water to the skin to hold it in without feeling heavy, making it perfect for dry skin that's acne prone. Hyaluronic acid moisturizers like Strivectin Re-Quench Water Cream Hyaluronic + Electrolyte Moisturizer are one of the best moisturizers for sensitive skin, too, as hyaluronic acid is an ingredient that’s safe for sensitive skin since it’s a lightweight, natural substance.
Many of the skin care ingredients that are the best for dry skin on the face are also good for sensitive skin. Ingredients that are known for their soothing effects on redness and irritation also have the ability to protect dry skin and help maintain hydration levels.
Natural plant extracts are a wonderful ingredient to look for in a good face moisturizer for sensitive skin as they aren’t as abrasive as their chemical counterparts and often have antioxidant properties to protect the skin against environmental stressors, which can worsen dry skin.
Calendula flower extract is a naturally-derived ingredient that’s antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial, and can treat sensitive irritated skin. Calendula flower extract can often be found in calming nourishing night creams for babies like the Babo Botanicals Moisturizing Baby Lotion and make excellent moisturizers for anyone with dry skin to use at night when you’re letting your skin rest from the day.
While moisturizing dry skin is essential to a good skin care routine for dry skin, there are a few other things to keep in mind. Be sure to properly cleanse your face to keep the skin clear of any dirt and buildup that accumulates throughout the day before applying your moisturizer at night. The reason for this is that our skin does most of its regeneration at night, and this is when you’ll get the most benefits from your face cream.
If you’re using any spot treatments or serums, be sure they’re safe for dry skin. Many serums and spot treatments contain harsh ingredients such as chemical exfoliants that, while they are powerful and do their job, make dry skin worse. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever use them again, but discontinue use until you get your dry skin under control and can tolerate them again.
Last but not least, the key to keeping dry skin moisturized is to wear a sunscreen like the Obagi Obagi360 HydraFactor Broad Spectrum SPF 30. Wearing a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 doesn’t just fend off a nasty sunburn, but protects the skin barrier from the stress of UV exposure that can lead to a weakened skin barrier that's dry, irritated and lackluster complexion.
Finding a skin care routine that will nourish your dry skin is challenging, but not impossible. Just because a moisturizer is made for dry skin doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for your dry skin. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different moisturizers and formulas! From thick moisturizing creams for dry skin to lightweight gel lotions, there is a dry skin moisturizer for everyone.
]]>Every person is unique, and so is everyone's skin. There are five different skin types: dry, sensitive, normal, oily, and aging, and each require different care. This is why you should ask the question, "What type of skin do I have?" This page will help you answer this question and provide you with valuable advice on how to care for your skin type.
The type of skin you have may be one of the following: oily, dry, normal, sensitive, and aging. In addition, combination skin is another classification of skin types. Skin types and conditions are influenced by a combination of factors such as your genes, lifestyle, activity, how much water you drink, blood circulation, environmental factors, food you eat, and the amount of oil content your body produces.
All skin types have their own set of characteristics and symptoms that need your special attention. It is important to find out more about what your skin type is so that you know how to address its specific needs, and the type of treatment and care that is best suited for you.
Let’s take a look at the different skin types:
Having dry skin/combination skin is something many people struggle with. This is a very uncomfortable condition that is characterized by itching, scaling, and cracking skin. Dry skin can happen for many reasons. For instance, you may naturally have dry type skin brought about by your genes or level of fitness. But even if your face or other areas used to be oily, it is still possible to develop dry skin, especially during the winter months. Because of this, your skincare routine order can change depending on the season.
Dry skin is not only limited to your face but also other areas of your body, most especially your legs, hands, and arms. If you want to combat this skin condition, you need to know the best moisturizer for dry skin so you can include it in your face care. If your skin feels dry, you can add the Obagi skincare system to your skin care regimen.
Products for dry skin or combination skin aren't hard to find. First, you can get the Obagi-C Rx System that is meant for normal to dry skin. This Obagi kit for normal to dry skin has the power of arbutin and vitamin C to improve your skin tone and facilitate skin rejuvenation. In time, you will have overall healthier skin and enhanced complexion. These Obagi skin care products are specifically formulated to combat dry skin. It contains 4% hydroquinone, which can reduce hyperpigmentation and melasma.
Next is the Obagi Nu-Derm System, that provides skin care formulated to correct dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and aging issues. After trying out this product, you won't have to deal with dehydrated skin again.
You have sensitive skin or combination skin if you are prone to skin reactions such as inflammation. Those with sensitive skin may notice that they usually have a strong reaction to dyes, fragrances, and chemicals that are present in the products they use. They may also easily get a red rash from certain types of clothing.
This is why you need to get the right sensitive skin care regimen, including a sensitive skin moisturizer that will give you the relief you need.
Skin sensitivity is a hassle to deal with. Thankfully, Obagi features many products in its arsenal that you can use for your skin treatment at home. One of the best ones you can get is the Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser. This mild facial cleanser is perfect for all skin types that need gentle care. It doesn't dry out your skin, so after every wash, your face will feel soft and supple.
The SUZAN OBAGI MD line is also very helpful for people when skin is sensitive. Not only will this line of skin care make your skin look healthier, but it will also improve the overall quality of your skin.
For example, the Suzan Obagi Balancing Toner will remove all traces of dirt and oil in your skin and control excess oil. It also helps to balance the skin's natural pH level and minimizes the appearance of large pores. You may also get the Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex which contains Retinaldehyde and vitamins C and E to get rid of redness.
If you like going out in the sun and getting tans, the SUZAN OBAGI MD Soothing Complex Broad Spectrum with SPF 25 will give you protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. It has a very lightweight formula and helps blur the imperfections in your skin thanks to its barely noticeable tint.
The different types of skin may be quite confusing to master, but if you have a normal skin type, this means you have well-balanced skin. However, this doesn't mean people with normal skin types have perfect skin.
You may experience dryness on your cheeks when you have this skin type. This will make it quite hard for you to find skin care products for normal skin, like moisturizers that aren't heavy yet will give you substantial moisture retention where you need it the most.
Most people who have normal skin are not prone to acne blemishes or breakouts on their t-zone or cheeks. However, they may need to try an Obagi exfoliating cleanser normal to oily skin every once in a while to keep these parts balanced and remove dead skin cells. The different products for normal skin types will ensure that your skin will look and feel its best.
Normal skin is characterized by equal levels of oil production in the face. In other words, it is neither dry nor oil free. To maintain this condition, you can try the Obagi skin CLENZIDERM M.D. Acne Therapeutic System. This 3-step acne treatment will help you prevent acne thanks to ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. As a result, you can maintain a clearer and healthier complexion.
If you need help with exfoliation, the Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte advanced exfoliation lotion will remove dull skin and promote natural skin turnover. Meant for various skin types, this skin treatment at home has a lightweight formula so your face won't feel heavy and clogged.
Oil is great for the skin, but if your oil glands produce too much, it can leave your pores clogged and congested throughout the day. While people who have an oily skin type or combination skin can enjoy a suppler complexion, fewer wrinkles, and clean pores, the excess oil and sebum production can still leave your skin looking problematic. This is why skin care for oily skin type is so important for you and your pores.
Exfoliation is an integral part of the best skin care routine for oily skin to avoid excessive sebum production and promote cell turnover. This will also help balance the texture, sebum production, and tone of the skin. Since oily skin is more prone to breakouts, hyperpigmentation can sometimes be a problem. This is when a pimple that has healed leaves a dark spot in places like the forehead, nose, and chin.
Exfoliation will allow you to lighten these dark spots and polish all layers of the skin that needs help. People suffering from severe acne breakouts should also invest in an exfoliator in their simple skin care routine for oily skin that has powerful ingredients that will speed up healing and prevent blemishes.
The CLENZIderm MD skin care line is a favorite among people looking for oily skin treatment. It includes daily care foaming cleanser, pore therapy, and therapeutic lotion to keep oily skin look good. The face cleanser contains 2 percent salicylic acid that will help unclog pores and get rid of impurities.
If you want to explore other skincare for oily skin to improve the appearance of blemishes caused by pimples, try the Obagi Nu-Derm FX System, perfect for skin care treatment at home. This complete skincare routine will drastically change the look of your skin by brightening dark spots and evening out your complexion. It will not only correct spots but also lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, roughness, and age spots.
Normal skin changes with aging, but how your skin ages will depend on a few factors such as your lifestyle, genes, personal habits, and diet. As you age, your skin also changes in a lot of ways.
Common aging skin problems include having dry, itchy, and rough patches. Some people's skin also becomes transparent-looking. This happens when the epidermis and dermis layers become thinner. You will also lose elastin and collagen, which will make your skin hang loosely and become more fragile.
Sun exposure is one of the culprits of aging for people who do not wear SPF 30 or higher. Over time, the UV light damages your skin's elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin will lose its ability to snap back when it is stretched. Therefore, it will sag. Elderly skin conditions can still be remedied through the Obagi system for aging skin.
The eye region is one of the first areas that will show signs of aging skin. You can take care of this area by applying the ELASTIderm eye cream. This rejuvenating eye cream contains a BI-Mineral contour complex to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Aging skin problems can also be remedied with the Daily Hydro Drops Facial Serum, which is a hydrator with cutting-edge Isoplentix technology with Abyssinian and hibiscus oils as well as vitamin B3 that leaves the skin looking radiant and smooth all day long.
The most crucial step in taking care of your skin comes is a thorough understanding of what your skin type is and how it adapts depending on the season or your age. Hormonal changes can also affect your skin type. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and it's as complex as your lungs, liver, and heart. There are many different skin types and combination skin that require special care. Taking the time to give your type of skin what it needs will help you look more radiant and feel great without having to visit a dermatologist for advice.
]]>Before buying a new skincare face mask, it’s important to figure out your skin type. Is your skin oily, dry, sensitive or acne-prone? Maybe you have none of these concerns and you simply want a face mask for smooth skin. Whatever your skin concerns are, read on to find out what to look for before purchasing a face mask to add to your skin care routine.
Face Mask for Dry SkinDry skin can be difficult to treat. Other than the tight, dry feeling that never seems to go away, dryness can also cause flakiness and irritation, making it difficult to wear makeup and sunscreen. Dry skin can be genetic, a result of cold weather, or a result of compromising your skin barrier from using overly harsh ingredients on your face.
Whatever the reason, a face mask for dry skin can help replenish moisture for faster results to get your skin back to normal. The goal of a good face mask for dry skin is to lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier from further dryness and irritation and prevent flakiness.
There are a lot of face masks that can benefit dry skin. The best face masks for dry skin are moisturizing masks, sometimes referred to as hydrating masks, and cream masks. These types of face masks for dry skin tend to be a thicker consistency than other face masks since they’re made to be richer. They are more hydrating than other skin masks because they incorporate oils and butters to hydrate your skin.
Ingredients to look for in a good face mask that’s best for dry skin feature humectants, oils, and butters higher up on the ingredient list. Humectants are skin care ingredients that function by binding water to the skin and holding in moisture. Honey, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera are a few examples of humectants to look for. Butters such as, shea butter and cocoa butter, work as emollients to soften and smooth the skin while oils add that last boost of hydration and lock everything in.
Face Mask for Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is perhaps the most difficult skin type to deal with. Choosing a face mask for sensitive skin requires more thought than other skin types, since you want to make sure that you’ll have the skin feeling healthy and less inflamed. Sensitive skin is skin that is more prone to redness, irritation, and inflammation, and often can’t tolerate the same ingredients that those with oily or normal skin can. People with sensitive skin have to be careful about staying away from stronger and more abrasive ingredients.
Those with sensitive skin must be extremely careful when trying new ingredients as this can aggravate sensitive skin. Good ingredients to look for in a mask for sensitive skin that are least likely to cause irritation are natural ingredients such as green tea, chamomile, aloe vera, shea butter, and coconut water. These are all naturally derived plant ingredients that are the least likely to cause irritation due to their gentle nature and the fact that they’re less harsh than other ingredients.
If you have sensitive skin it's important to be aware of which ingredients you should look out for and avoid in a face mask. Ingredients like vitamin C and a beta hydroxy acid like salicylic acid, for instance, are wonderful for most skin types, but they can, unfortunately, irritate already sensitive skin due to the fact that they penetrate the skin barrier deeper than other ingredients.
Many face masks for dry skin can also benefit sensitive skin. Most moisturizing masks that help dry skin types will have ingredients that promote hydration and soothe irritation at the same time (such as humectants). Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, honey, and aloe vera are ingredients to look for that are commonly found in beauty products and face masks for sensitive skin.
One of the best face masks for sensitive skin are gel masks or water sleeping masks. These are skin care masks that are formulated to hydrate and nourish the skin without aggravating it. Gel masks are cooler on the skin, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and calming. Common gel masks are ones with cucumber and aloe vera, two natural ingredients known for their soothing qualities. These gel masks can become a part of your nighttime skin care routine, and can be left on overnight to soothe skin while you sleep.
Face Mask for Oily SkinOily skin is skin that produces too much sebum, or excess oil, and is usually accompanied by large pores, blackheads and pimples. You may have certain areas of your face that are oily while others are not. The T-zone in particular, which is the forehead, nose and chin, is the area of the face most known for producing excess oil.
The best face mask for oily skin are masks that can break up and absorb the excess oil to clear out clogged pores. Good face masks for oily skin are clay masks such as one with kaolin clay, and exfoliating masks with a beta hydroxy acid like salicylic acid. These can also benefit acne-prone skin by soaking up excess oil that contributes to pimples and brightening the complexion. Clay masks help clear out clogged pores and blackheads, too.
Peel off masks are a good choice for oily skin also. These types of masks are made with ingredients that dry and harden when they come in contact with air. You can carefully smear the paste-like substance onto your face, and wait the designated time for it to harden. When it’s time to take off the masks, they can be peeled off instead of rinsed off. The advantage to a peel off mask is that as it hardens, it physically removes the dead skin cells, excess oil, and other buildup that comes off when the mask is peeled.
While alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) make great exfoliating masks, an exfoliating mask made primarily with beta hydroxy acid mask is best for oily skin since BHAs are oil-soluble chemical exfoliants. BHAs can target the oil found within clogged pores that contributes to acne and oily-prone skin by breaking it up to leave it smoother and brighter. Salicylic acid is a BHA that is commonly found in beauty skin care products and face masks for oily skin.
Because beta hydroxy acids are so powerful and can cut through oil, it’s important to note that if you have dry skin or sensitive skin, you want to avoid a face mask with salicylic acid as it can worsen dryness or inflammation. Conversely, a clay mask is not good for dry skin as this can cause dryness, redness and flaking.
Face Mask for Clear Skin
Many of the same ingredients that are good for oily skin are good for clear skin, too. Ingredients such as salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid), and glycolic acid and lactic acid (alpha-hydroxy acids) have wonderful acne-fighting properties and help alleviate a dull, congested skin tone and give brighter results.
AHAs and BHAs are especially good face masks for clear skin since they are chemical exfoliants that work by exfoliating the top layer of the skin, sloughing off dead skin cells and busting up oil and dirt that contribute to a lackluster complexion. A face mask with AHAs or BHAs won’t just break up oil, but it will leave the skin feeling softer and smoother, too.
BHAs are oil-soluble chemical exfoliants, and AHAs are their water-soluble counterparts. AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid are gentler on the skin but effective at shedding dead skin cells without causing as much irritation as BHAs since they’re water-soluble. A good face mask for clear skin is one that incorporates a mixture of AHAs and BHAs for the ultimate skin brightening duo.
Other face masks for clear skin are peel-off masks which work by applying them to the face and allowing them to air dry. After the peel off mask has air dried, it’s then gently peeled off, taking the dirt, blackheads, and excess oil with it.
Face Mask for Smooth SkinA lack of smooth skin is a skin concern everyone deals with at some point or another in their life. Whether you want a more even skin texture, fewer pimples or more even skin tone and less hyperpigmentation, smooth skin is something we can all benefit from.
A good face mask for smooth skin is something that has skin-brightening antioxidants such as, vitamin C and green tea. Vitamin C is especially effective at promoting a clearer, smoother complexion both in skin texture and skin tone.
Face masks for smooth skin can come in many different formulas, as it’s the ingredients themselves that offer the benefits you want. Exfoliating masks with AHAs like glycolic acid, lactic acid and natural exfoliants like apple cider vinegar promote new skin cells for brighter, smoother skin while more gentle gel masks with green tea can also leave the skin smooth and supple.
FAQs on Face MasksDo face masks really help your skin?
While face masks aren’t absolutely necessary for a good beauty skin care routine, they can go quite some way in resolving your skin concerns. Incorporating a face mask into your beauty routine can boost your desired skin care outcome, and provide quicker results than other skin care treatment.
What is the best face mask in skin care?
There’s no one best face mask. The best face mask is the one that works for your skin type and unique needs! If you have dry skin, for example, that you wish to hydrate and restore the skin barrier, the best face mask for you may be a water sleeping mask that is left on overnight to hydrate. On the other hand, if you have oily skin that’s prone to acne, the best face mask for you may be a peel off mask that is more abrasive and can physically exfoliate the top layer of skin to restore balance to your skin.
The best face masks for acne are often the same type of face masks for oily skin and face masks for clear skin. This is because the same ingredients that help cut through oil and clogged pores, such as a BHA like salicylic acid, also target pimples and the buildup that contributes to acne. You may find a face mask that says it's specifically for acne, but if you don’t, you can look for a face mask for oily skin.
Is it good for your skin to be treated to a face mask everyday?
Most skin care face masks should be applied 1-3 weekly. Skin care face masks for oily skin and clear skin are often recommended for weekly usage, since these contain harsher and more abrasive ingredients in higher concentrations. Some more gentle face masks, like face masks for dry skin and sensitive skin, may be used more often since these are intended to replenish moisture and soothe. Always be sure to read the instructions on the back of your skin care face masks for recommended use.
]]>The first step to any makeup routine is always to apply a moisturizer. After a quick cleanse, gently pat a hydrating moisturizer into the skin. Your face will be luminous and primed for makeup. Also, it's critical to apply an SPF (sun protection factor) product even if you are staying indoors. Many moisturizers include an SPF, so check out the ingredients. Fantastic skin is the basis for any gorgeous makeup application!
Since pink and red tones look exaggerated on camera, tired eyes can appear much worse. Pick up a bottle of brightening eye drops, and in about 60 seconds, your eyes will be much whiter. The drops work to constrict the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye for up to 8 hours. Nobody will know you just opened those eyes 15 minutes ago!
Pick a concealer a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Apply with fingers to your under eyes, inner corners of eyes, bridge of your nose, and just above your jawline. This technique will brighten the eyes and contour the face. Adding some dimension with concealer is much easier than going in with multiple powders. If oversleeping for calls or meetings is an issue, concealer will make sure you look like you've been awake for hours! If you only have time for one makeup product, choose concealer.
To avoid looking washed out on video calls, make sure to go for a blush a tad brighter than what you usually choose. A more saturated hue will give more life to your face. When applying, load an oval-shaped blush brush with very little product and build it up gradually. Lightly sweep the blush just past the apples of the cheeks, outward and up towards the temples. This method will give the face a lifted and more awake appearance.
Use your computer camera to apply mascara so you'll be able to see exactly how you appear to others on the screen. Cameras and monitors have a way of making you look dull and different than how you may look in the mirror. Choose a black mascara to give the most definition and greatest brightening effect to your eyes. Also, curl the lashes first to help the lashes show up on the camera. Eyeliner is not necessary if you're short on time, but don't forget to apply a coat of mascara to the bottom lashes as well.
The eyebrows frame the face, and ignoring them can drag down your entire look. To give them definition and volume, use a brow brush to brush them upwards. Then, take a micro-brow pencil and create small strokes in the brow to fill in any sparse areas.
These easy-to-execute techniques are the basics that you can build on for a great routine. The next time you find yourself with minutes to spare on makeup for any video call, keep these tips in mind. No matter your profession, you will appear like a fully awake and thriving person when logging on!
]]>The most important tip for women with aging skin is to change up your foundation. As the skin ages, it begins to lose moisture and elasticity, and fine lines start to develop around the eyes, on the forehead, and around the mouth. A full-coverage, matte foundation will accentuate these issues and draw attention where you don't want it! Switch to a satin or dewy finish foundation. These will give the skin a youthful, lit from within appearance. Fine lines will appear blurred, and the skin will look naturally beautiful. A tinted moisturizer that contains an SPF (sun protection factor) is also a nice option for aging skin instead of a full coverage foundation.
Another way to simplify your beauty regime while also achieving a more youthful appearance is to change up your eye makeup. After a certain age, eyeliner, several shadows, layers of mascara, and false lashes are just not necessary. Aside from taking a ton of time, all of these products can make the eyes look smaller and more tired. To open up the eyes and make them stand out, all that you may need is mascara! First, curl your lashes with an eyelash curler. Then use 1-2 coats of your favorite mascara, not forgetting your bottom lashes. If you would like to add some liner to your top lash line, start it about halfway across your eye and wing it out. The liner will give your eyes a lifted and wide appearance. Another simple trick is to line the bottom waterline with a flesh-colored liner. This technique makes the whites of the eyes seem bigger!
The next way to update your beauty look is to change where you apply your blush on the face. Apply blush starting just past the apples with the brush placed high on the cheekbone. Sweeping the blush up, blend it out towards the temples. This technique will give your face a lifted and youthful appearance. After always being told to apply the product to the apples of your cheeks, it may be tricky to retrain yourself.
Following these few simple makeup tips to change up an old routine can have a major impact on how old you appear! It is easier than you think to simplify your staples while looking years younger. Think of these things the next time your heading out the door!
]]>Before the pandemic, Zoom meetings were virtually unheard of. But now, it has become the norm. Without a doubt, Zoom is the best way to have a meeting while enjoying the comfort and safety of your home. In a lot of ways, it makes you feel as if you're sitting on a conference table with your colleagues instead of balancing your laptop on your bed.
Despite the efficiency of Zoom, it also poses unique challenges - one being that it's almost impossible to look fresh over a computer screen. If you are looking to up your makeup game, we've got the perfect tips for you.
First of all make sure that you're not sitting under harsh light, since this can create shadows on your face. You can try to sit by a window or any opening where there is enough natural light seeping in. This will fill out your face and make it brighter.
If you want to take the extra leap, get an illuminating foundation. This will even out your skin tone and give you a little glow. Laptop cameras pick up light well, so this will show off your radiant skin. Then, just use concealer to cover dark circles. This will brighten up your whole face. If you want to pick up the light more, add highlighter to the high points of your face.
Chances are, you've seen countless tutorials on Tiktok or Instagram on how to over-line your lips. If you haven't done this before, it may seem intimidating to try in person. Thankfully, Zoom is forgiving, and no one will be able to tell if you over-lined your lips over the screen. Think of it this way - now is the best time to try out new makeup techniques and trends.
To over-line your lips, simply find a lip liner that matches your lip color and use this to line your cupid's bow to get more definition. For your lipstick, use one that has a satin formula. Stay away from matte colors. Finish it up with a gloss, because the shine on your lips will make them seem bigger.
If you've had a rough night or long day and you're exhausted, you want your eyes to appear larger since it will make you look more awake. To do this look, redefine your crease with a light brown shadow. Keep the shape rounded and follow your natural eye shape. Then, trace the eyeliner underneath your lash line to extend your eye perimeter and make it appear wider. Lastly, finish it up with two to three generous coats of mascara. For this look, mascara will give you the essential eye definition you need.
For those who want to have a youthful flush, blush is key. Choose bright and warm shades, because cool tones will only translate darker on camera. Warm tones like peach and coral work well for this look. To apply blush, just sweep it high on your cheekbone and take it to the apples of your cheek.
You can also apply the blush on the bridge of your nose. To finish this look, swipe your blush across your temples and eyelids. This may sound weird, but it will help you achieve a healthy flush all over. The inverted V shape will also give your face brightness and dimension.
Let's face it- you can't spend two hours doing your makeup for a Zoom meeting. Everyone's easiest makeup look differs depending on their makeup habits and preferences, but this one is a no-fail. The secret behind this makeup look is to cut corners whenever possible. However, this look won't turn out great if you do not have a good skincare routine.
If you don't have enough time on your hands, just apply makeup to your lips, cheeks, and eyes instead of doing everything from the primer to setting spray. If you really need concealer, opt for buildable liquid formulas so you won't need a beauty blender. While you wait for your concealer to dry, move on to your eyes, lips, and cheeks.
When doing your makeup, do it on the device you'll be using for Zoom instead of your mirror. The camera in your computer will wash you out, and in some instances, even flatten your face. You need to see your work over the camera to get the full effect. If you feel like you're too pale, grab a fluffy brush and a bronzer and swirl it around the edge of your face. But don't worry. You shouldn't be aiming for perfection. If it looks like you did not apply enough, do it again.
In the last few months, a lot of people have been working from their homes. If you're one of these people, you may have skipped putting on makeup or fixing your hair for longer than society deems suitable. However, this doesn't mean you have to look wrecked during Zoom meetings. With the tips listed above, you'll look put together even if you're wearing sweatpants.
]]>Before you start pampering your skin, you first have to remove the dirt, oil, and of course, makeup. Pay attention to your eye area since it is one of the first parts of your face to show aging.
For this area, simply soak a cotton pad with your favorite makeup remover, put it over your eye for a few seconds to give the makeup time to dissolve, and you're done.
Your face may already look clean but that doesn't mean it is free from dirt. After removing your make up, proceed with an oil-based cleanser. Oil cleansers will help you get rid of your pesky pimples.
Oils are the best product you can use to dissolve all types of sunscreen and makeup formulas. Oils can also get rid of pollutants that may clog your pores. These oils act as an emulsifier so it won't leave your skin with an annoying greasy residue.
After rinsing the oil cleanser with lukewarm water, proceed with a foam or water-based cleaner. This type of gentle product will help you get rid of all the water-based free radicals in your face, which includes dirt and sweat.
Contrary to what you think, double cleansing is not just a marketing gimmick. It is an important skincare step.
A nighttime skincare routine without toner is not complete. This essential skincare step will balance out the pH level of your skin and prep it for other products and formulas that will follow. Just ensure that your toner is specifically formulated to target your major skin concern, such as hydration, fighting bacteria, or anti-aging.
Press the toner on your face using your palms if you want to go green. You can also soak a cotton pad with toner and tap it gently on your face and neck area.
Serums contain powerful ingredients that your skin needs. Because it is made up of smaller molecules, the active ingredients can penetrate your skin better.
Many serums are very light since they are water-based. However, you can still find oils marketed as serums. Serums may be quite expensive but you'll find they are worth the money.
Adding more oil to your face will help your skin look better. Night oils balance out your skin's natural oil production. Because of this, oily skin will produce less oil since it's not getting a distress signal to relieve dryness. This product also helps lock in moisture and makes your skin glow.
You've applied quite a lot of product to your skin, but you're not done yet. Now, you need to seal everything in with a good moisturizer. This way, all the hard work in the previous steps will not be for nothing.
Don't forget to take care of your lips. To soften your pout, apply a lip mask to combat the drying effects of wearing tint or lipstick, and the damage from external elements. A lip sleeping mask enriched with vitamin C will help heal chapped lips faster and ensure that your lips stay plump and kissable.
Doing your skincare routine is hard work, but is important if you want to look good. The steps mentioned above are perfect to follow for every day application. So take care of your skin if you want your skin to remain looking young and beautiful.
]]>Learning about the differences between physical and chemical sunscreens, the terminology involved, and skin care professionals' recommendations will help your skin stay healthy and radiant for years to come.
You'll get the best sun protection if you know how to decode sunscreen labels.
Broad spectrum, or full spectrum, sunscreen protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause premature aging while UVB rays cause sunburn; both contribute to skin cancer.
Not all sunscreens are broad spectrum; check labels before you buy. Otherwise, you may inadvertently forgo valuable skin protection.
Sunscreens are categorized by their SPF, or sun protection factor. SPF is the number that refers to the sunscreen's ability to protect skin from UVB rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF 15 protects you from about 93 percent of UVB rays, and SPF 30 protects you from about 97 percent.
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests using sunscreen with an SPF or 30 or greater and reapplying every two hours when you're outside.
Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun's rays. They tend to irritate the skin more than physical sunscreens and sting if they get in your eyes.
Chemical sunscreens contain many ingredients, but the most common is oxybenzone. Its primary purpose is to absorb UV rays. The American Academy of Dermatology states that the chemical is safe, but some controversy surrounds its use. Studies have shown that it's able to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream, leading some toxicology experts to believe that it may cause health problems.
Chemical sunscreens are colorless and should be applied twenty minutes before sun exposure.
Physical sunscreens work by blocking the sun's rays. They're gentle, unlikely to cause irritation, and can't sink into the skin and penetrate the bloodstream.
Physical sunscreens are made from titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide, derived from titanium, is noncomedogenic. This means it doesn't contain oil that may block pores and cause breakouts. Titanium dioxide doesn't provide adequate protection from UVA rays so it must be combined with other ingredients to provide satisfactory protection.
Zinc oxide is also noncomedogenic, but it protects skin from both UVB and UVA rays.
Both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are derived from chalky materials and tend to leave a white cast on the skin.
Physical sunscreen begins working immediately after application.
Sun protection plays a big role in skin health. Using sunscreen regularly can prevent wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer.
Skin Cancer Prevention
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that regular sunscreen use reduced the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 50 to 73 percent.
It also decreases the risk of developing basal and squamous cell carcinomas. These skin cancers are less deadly and invasive than melanoma but still require medical intervention.
Exposure to sun's UV rays damages skin's elastin, the fibers that keep skin taut and firm. Once damaged, elastin loses its ability to bounce back and skin starts to sag and stretch.
The Skin Care Foundation estimates that about 90 percent of the visible signs of aging comes from sun damage. Wearing sunscreen helps prevent age spots and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and applying it daily will help your skin stay clear, supple, and soft.
If you have a family history of skin cancer or just want maximum protection from the sun, avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sun's rays are the strongest during those hours and can do the most damage. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing for even greater protection.
Regular sunscreen use is the best way to prevent premature aging and protect against skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for the most effective protection.
