In total, the T-zone can have between 400 and 900 oil glands in a square centimeter. That’s a lot of oil guys! Hormonal Fluctuations
While you might not appreciate the shiny look that extra oil gives you, the oil actually serves an important purpose: it acts as a protective shield to keep water in and make sure the bad guys like bacteria and fungi stay out.
During certain life phases such as puberty or menstruation, your body needs more of that protection. That’s why oil glands are equipped with androgen receptors, which receive messages from the hormones your brain sends out that it’s time to produce more oil.
What happens, though, is that other everyday factors can trick your body into sending out extra androgen signals, even when your skin doesn't need extra weather protection. For example, high-glycemic foods (like sugar or refined carbs) cause a spike in insulin. That insulin surge signals your body to pump out even more androgens and makes your oil glands extra sensitive to them. Stress does something similar by releasing cortisol along with additional background androgens. The end result? Your oil factories get over-stimulated, forcing all that unnecessary oil to spill out of your pores and create that annoying shine.Â

Dehydration
This reason might sound strange to you at first, but oily skin can actually be caused by dehydration. While oily skin may not look dry to you (and it might sound like a contradiction,) skin that’s lacking water is a very common reason for oil overproduction. That’s because your skin needs both water and oil to be healthy and smooth. But your skin can’t produce water for itself, the only thing it can make is oil. So when your skin gets dehydrated, it panics and tries to protect itself from drying out even more. The only thing it can do, though, is produce more oil to trap whatever moisture is still left in your face. It can’t manufacture water for itself.Â
That’s how dry skin can end up coated in a greasy film of oil, as your skin reacts to the dryness with oil overproduction. If your skin feels tight or stretched under the shiny oiliness, the extra oil is probably caused by dehydration.
