When should I apply sunscreen?
To ensure you’re getting maximum protection, both face and body sunscreens should be applied at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapplied at regular intervals throughout the day (check the product packaging for specifics).
It’s important to note that you will need to reapply your sunscreen sooner if you have been swimming, sweating, or rubbing your skin with a towel, since these all remove the layer of sunscreen from your skin.
How long does sunscreen last?
The protection your sunscreen provides will begin to diminish after 2 hours, which is why it’s important that you don’t only apply your face and body sunscreens in the morning. We recommend popping a mist-style sunscreen such as Supergoop Play Antioxidant Body Mist SPF 50 with Vitamin C in your purse, so you can quickly and easily top up throughout the day.
As for how long face and body sunscreens last inside the bottle, the FDA requires that they remain at their original strength for at least three years. So if you have some sunscreen left over from last year’s vacation, it’s still okay to use!
How to tell if sunscreen is safe?
To ensure your skin is fully protected, always look for a body or face sunscreen which states it is “broad spectrum”. This means it provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Not only is it a safer option overall, but it also provides better protection against sun-related aging (e.g. wrinkles) than a non-broad spectrum sunscreen.
As for the ingredients, there are two types of face and body sunscreens: chemical, and mineral. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat which dissipates away. Mineral sunscreens physically block the UV rays from reaching the skin below, reflecting them away instead. While many chemical sunscreens have been shown to be safe to use, if you’re worried about the idea of chemicals on your skin just choose a mineral sunscreen instead (look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in the ingredients list).
Why do people get breakouts from sunscreen?
Face and body sunscreens which are especially thick or greasy can block pores, leading to breakouts. The best sunscreen for acne prone skin is one that’s lightweight and oil-free, as well as free from common skin irritants such as fragrances and artificial preservatives. Coola Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 Fragrance Free is a great option! We stand behind our products and trust you will be happy with your purchase.
