How do I choose a facial highlighter?
Highlighters should be roughly two shades lighter than your natural complexion. For pale skin tones, look for pearlescent silver, champagne or lilac, and avoid anything with red undertones. These icy colors will look too frosty on warmer skin tones however, so those with medium/olive skin should choose highlighters with a peachy, golden or light bronze sheen which will leave you looking beautifully sun-kissed instead. And dark skin tones look incredible with facial highlights in a rich rose gold or warm bronze color.
Liquid highlighters for the face tend to work best on normal to dry skin types, while those with oily skin will likely want to stick to a powder-based facial highlighter to keep the effect glowy rather than shiny.
How do I apply facial highlighter?
For best results, dust powder highlighters on with a fan brush. Liquid or stick highlighters should be dotted on and then blended out with a makeup brush or makeup sponge, and illuminating brow pencils can be applied by drawing a line directly below your eyebrow and then blended downwards.
The best way to use highlighters for face contouring is to apply them to all of the high points of the face: the tops of the cheekbones, the brow bone, down the bridge of your nose, and atop your upper lip. Once you’ve mastered basic facial highlights, you can create even more dimension with a multi-shade palette such as the Anastasia Beverly Hills Sugar Glow Kit.
What is the difference between facial highlighter powder and pen?
A highlighting pencil or pen offers more precision, making it ideal for smaller areas such as defining your brow bone, highlighting your cupid’s bow, or drawing a line down the center of your nose to make it look narrower. Highlighter powder on the other hand is great for emphasizing your cheekbones, contouring your chin, adding radiance to your forehead, or sweeping across your collarbones and other parts of your body.
